Paddy Madden completes move to Scunthorpe United

The former Bohs man drops down the divisions in search of first-team football.

IRELAND INTERNATIONAL Paddy Madden has signed for League Two side Scunthorpe United on a two-and-a-half-year deal, the club have confirmed.

The 23-year-old former Bohs striker joins from Yeovil Town, having been part of a squad that was promoted to the Championship through the play-offs last year.

“I have had the feeling of promotion last season with Yeovil and I am hungry for more promotion so I am excited by this new challenge,” Madden said today.

“Things were not working out at Yeovil Town so when I got told the chairman and gaffer here was on to me I was interested. Scunthorpe are a very ambitious club and I want to be part of that.

“Winning titles is what I strive to do. I want to win as much silverware as I can. We are in a fantastic position at the top of the league and I want to come in here and help them win the league.”

Why can’t Irish players, with the exception of Cillian Sheridan and Padraig Amond, consider moving to the continent. The lack of ambition amongst Irish players to at least test themselves in more technical adept playing environment is a bit depressing. This guy has played international football at senior level, surely there has to be some mid level top flight team in Holland, Portugal, Belgium or Spain willing to take a punt . Surely the pull of Mammy’s cooking can’t be that strong!

He got 10 mins in a scoreless draw against Wales, Noel. He’s far from proven at international level. I’m sure the lad would love to play for Barcelona, Bayern or Ajax, it’s more likely that he didn’t get any offers outside of England than he opted to stay for the ‘mummy’s cooking’.

Chances are no mid table teams in these counties would want a player who can’t get a game in team at foot of a championship league.

Some players have a level, I feel madden has found his in L1/2
He’s struggled at Yeovil this yr and they are near the bottom of the championship.
I’d imagine he’s realistic and I respect him that he’s probably taken a pay cut to get game time.

I would say he got a pay rise to drop two divisions to be honest, hard to see Yeovil splashing the cash and from what I gather Sthorpe have a good few quid behind them. He was a very good player in division one, so once he regains full fitness he should really stand out in division two

Hopefully he can find some form again that got him an Irish cap a few months back.. But then again Trap gave him that cap.
