IRELAND’S JASON SMYTH won T12 200m gold this afternoon to complete a sprint double at the Paralympic Athletics European Championships in Swansea.

Smyth’s time of 21.67 was good enough to comfortably beat Spain’s Joan Munar Martinez (22.28) and Arterm Loginov of Russia (22.55) who took silver and bronze respectively.

The Derry athlete is the reigning double World and Paralympic champion in the T13 classification, but he was reclassified to T12 on the eve of the championships due to a deterioration in his vision.

After winning the T12 100m on Tuesday, Smyth’s second gold of the week continued what had already been a successful day for Team Ireland.

He said: “It’s been a long summer and I seem to have had issues after issues so I’m just glad and delighted to get the medal in the 200m also.

“I didn’t feel I performed as well as I should have in the 100m so I’m much happier after this one.

“Championships are about medals, so I’m over the moon that I’ve delivered here.”

Earlier Cork native Orla Barry won silver in the F57 Discus, throwing 28.13m to beat Germany’s Ilke Wyludda (27.63m) to second place. Stela Envea of Bulgaria won gold with a season’s best of 31.88m in Swansea.

“I’m really happy to win silver,” 24-year-old Barry, who is a double-amputee, said afterwards.

“I hadn’t been throwing that well in training the last while so to perform far better today at a championships when it really counts is great. I’m delighted.”

Offaly’s Lorraine Regan threw a season’s best of 15.80m to finish fifth in the F56 Women’s Javlin, won by World and European record holder Martina Willing of Germany (20.71m).
