Leicester City legend Theo Zagorakis, star of Euro 2004 Neal Simpson/EMPICS Sport

Open thread: Who do you think will be the best player at Euro 2012?

We want to know the one player you think will stand out in Poland and the Ukraine. Let’s get some debate going…

IT’S THE CONVERSATION starter to end all conversation starters – who do you think will be the next Xavi, the next Zinedine Zidane, the next (seriously?) Theo Zagorakis?

We’re talking player of the tournament at Euro 2012.

Mesut Ozil currently leads the betting due to being a) German, b) one of the stars of the 2010 World Cup and c) frighteningly good at football, but these things rarely pan out as you expect them to.

What of Ronaldo? Iniesta? Robben? Schweinsteiger? Schürrle? Stephen Kelly?

Tell us, in the comments, who you think will stand out as the best player in Poland and the Ukraine…

I’d say Aleksandr Anatolyevich Kerzhakov. Serious striker for Zenit St. Petersburg and even more powerful in the Russian squad

Should be the tournament that showcases Mario Gotze to the world. Marco Reus and Thomas Muller should have a great tournament for Germany too. Andrea Pirlo, unlikely to get an award in that position, has had a top season with Juve playing deeper. Sneijder always does well in tournaments. Iniesta always a good bet

It’s going to be an attacking midfielder or striker who plays in the more popular games (ie. not ukraine vs sweden) and someone who the team is overly dependent on for either goals or assists.
I think Holland will escape above Portugal and go on to meet the Germans again in the semi so Robin van Persie would be my most likely choice as he’ll be involved in top billing games all the way through and has had a massive season dragging the gunners through single handed

True for arsenal but for Holland he’ll be put out on the wing to accommodate Huntelaar who’s also had a great season and has a better goals per game ratio for Holland than RVP
