Open thread: What would be your Ireland XI for the first World Cup qualifier in September?

Should Trapattoni ring the changes?

Trapattoni has a lot to consider ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.
Trapattoni has a lot to consider ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.

IRELAND’S EURO 2012 dream is over and now focus turns to the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Trap’s side are due to play Kazakhstan on September 7, before the all-important home tie with Germany on October 12.

Trapattoni consequently has a big decision to make: he can stick with more or less the same group of players that qualified for the Euros and subsequently failed to make any impact on the tournament, or he can make sweeping changes to Ireland’s ageing team.

Many critics have advocated the latter approach, with a series of promising youngsters such as James McCarthy, Seamus Coleman and Marc Wilson currently still waiting for a chance at international level.

However, Trapattoni is known for his conservative nature, therefore it would hardly be a surprise if he persists with more or less the same side he has fielded on a consistent basis since the beginning of his tenure.

So what do you think? What should be the Ireland XI for their first World Cup qualifier in September?

  • So we re all in agreement that Duff and Keane are finished then?

    Reply
    • Keane yes – At one point last night, Doyle was running at the backs and Keane was trying to break forward but just didn’t have the pace you could see it, it was like he was running in slow motion compared to Doyle.

    • not sure about o’shea myself. gibson has been good since joining everton composed in possession. i think andrews has looked good because of his energy compared to those around him but hes a headless chicken. andrews is a typical championship class player but i do respect his great work ethic.

    • I don’t think 4-4-2 is completely dead, it’s just that to pull it off you need and extremely talented link player in the mould as one of the two so that they can drop into midfield if you’re on the back foot. I think what you need is flexibility for players to be able to adapt within a formation rather than any defined formation.

    • It’s that kind of rigid thinking that’s the problem colm. It’s without doubt that a player like that is a striker and when you line up 4-4-2 and if you are dominating they are up top scoring and creating. However, they have the football intelligence and adaptability to change if things aren’t going their way, be that dropping off into a 4-4-1-1, dropping deeper again into a 4-5-1 or pulling wide into a 4-5-1, looking to plug holes and/or move the point of attack. My issue isn’t with 4-4-2 or 4-5-1, indeed against weak opponents a rigid 4-5-1 formation creates just as many problems as a rigid 4-4-2 does against top ones, it’s not the formation I gave issues with, its with the inability to adapt or show flexibility within the system.

  • If Robbie Keane wishes to continue with Ireland first thing he should do is return to the Premiership, otherwise out of sight, goodbye and thanks for all the goals.

Duff could still do a good job for Ireland – playing in the center of midfield as the attacking midfielder with Gibson/AN other behind

Given if fully fit is still an asset to the team, but the reserve keepers should play every minute of every friendly at least. Its a disgrace that our next in line keeper has only 8 caps (and a few of those would only be half games)

    • (hmmz, my first reply never appeared).

We don’t have to choose all of the above, and i would not be interested in Anton. What the list is, is a selection of players who can play for Ireland. Some of the players are very very talented. If you want to go down the route of only Irish born, then fair enough, but its incredibly narrow minded. The Germans would need to get rid of their 3 polish players with that same reasoning. So, its best to use what’s available wisely. We don’t develop grass roots properly, and don’t capitalise on the huge numbers of kids who casually play the game (As there are not enough clubs). So until we do, we are forced to look abroad if we want to compete.

The below selected players can all play for us, some are Irish born, some are not. But that short list there in addition to some of the players who regularly play can form the basis of a very good team.

Jonjo Shelvey (who can also declare for Scotland)
      Connor Wickham
      Anthony Pilkington
      Wes Houlihan
Conor Clifford (if he realises his potential)
Robbie Brady (if he realises his potential)

  • Hey folks

There isn’t a chance in hell of this team being picked by Trap in september (or ever even) but here is a selection that could really excite the irish supporter.

    Westwood
    Kelly Duffy Clark Wilson
    Coleman McCarthy Ireland Mclean
    Walters
    Long

Subs: Kenny, St Ledger, Gibson, S Reid, Hoolahan, Pilkington, Stokes

Now add these player that could also join the squad:
Keith Fahy, Kevin Foley, McGeady, Leon Best, Simon Cox, Daryl Murphy, Robbie Brady, Cillian Sheridan.

This squad is very inexperienced but has genuine quality and could play together for the next 5 years

I dont buy it when people say we don’t have the players.

The problem is, most of these players would not want to play Traps negative tactics.
Stephen Ireland has stated in April on bbc that he wouldnt rule out a return to Ireland, and even if he didn’t we have lots of quality on that bench and on the fringes.
Personally, if Trap is willing to be a little more positive and attacking minded in tactics, it could still be exciting times for Irish football.
Am i being naive? The talent is out there.

None of our players were playing at a higher level than D Duff whose Fulham team finished 7th I think. Juan Mata, David de Gea, Pedro of Barcelona, Negredo and others couldnt get into the Spain squad. Those 4 players would walk into the Irish side.

That defence looks awful. Coleman is a maybe for RB, but doesn’t get his game for Everyon in that position.

Hopefully the likes of Enda Stevens step up. Shane Duffy too.

  • A few reservations about Coleman’s defensive qualities. He can get caught out! But hey.. it wasn’t like O’Shea or Ward were, by any stretch of the imagination, “solid”. Players like Coleman, Clarke, Wilson, Hoolahan and Pilkington need to be reintroduced/introduced for, at least, peace of mind. Having said that, it wasn’t long ago when there were huge calls being made for Ward – now look at us. A degree of common sense is needed. Shocked by the calls for Given’s head, the man was clearly not fit. Still so much to offer. The calls for Henderson (remember the interest in Paddy Kenny pre-Cyprus?) are unjustified and have a real whiff of the Andy Reid saga. In hindsight, Trap was probably proved right on that one. Henderson though, should be promoted, given his assent and Westwood needs to find first team football. By the way, how many people here have actually seen Westwood play.. say.. 25+ league matches? I haven’t. Joe Mason, Duffy, Cunningham and Brady, like Henderson, need to be encouraged though and the same could now be said for Hunt, Gibson, Foley etc. How are they feeling on this Tuesday morning? This nonsense of sticking to ‘my players’ is rubbish. How many people here play league football, GAA, Rugby or any team sports on any given weekend? Anyone that does, knows that in most cases, the best 11, 15 or whatever, more than likely get picked each and every time. Yes, that does take into account elements such as ability, tactics, the opposition etc but in most cases everyone is fighting for the jersey in question right up until the final hour. Good management will always encourage or promote a degree of uncertainty within their squad just even to keep the players on their toes. The players in our squad knew not only that they were in the squad but unforgivably, who would also be starting/playing… weeks and even months ago. We do not possess a Iniesta, Rooney, Modric etc were that might be standard. Our players are not of that quality. We do however always bring fight and passion to the cause and I’m afraid to say it, but that was lacking on the pitch this time and probably the most disappointing part of this tournament. No expert or anything, but I reckon these qualities in relation to this championship were lost long before the players entered the field of play. If Trap wanted to keep his players comfortable or relaxed then he should have given more rest time, not promote this nonsensical atmosphere. He has a big job on his hands, nodding towards Gibson, Foley, Hunt once more and the possibility of retirements. I do not think wholesale changes need to be made though. A plan B and the furthering of options would be nice though.

  • Any team that has Westwood in goals should be dismissed straight away.

Given was struggling with fitness & was not up to his usual standard but so what. He can play at the highest level until he’s 39-49 if he wishes & is our greatest ever keeper & automatic starter

Of the others older brigade. Duff no longer is a starter but dropping him for a few games might galvanize him, the same for Keane. Look how hungry Kevin Doyle looked in 1st half after missing Spain game.

Keane should be dropped but only to the bench not retired. He would still be useful chasing a goal in last 20 mins with Walters & Long first choice or one on their own with 5 man midfield

    Given
    Clarke
    Dunne
    O Shea
    Kelly
    McClean
    Gibson
    Mccarthy

That’s the team that should start against Kazahastan, then drop one of the forwards & bring back Andrews from suspension for 5 man midfield against Germany

  • If Given is still going on the international scene (and is fit unlike recently) then he has to continue. Westwood is decent but not in the same class league as Given.

    1. Given, 2. Kelly 3. 4. Wilson St. Ledger 5. Dunne (if retired, Clarke) 6. McCarthy 7. Coleman 8. Andrews 9. Long 10. Walters 11. McClean

Bench: Westwood, Pilkington, Clarke, Hoolahan, Gibson, McGeady, Doyle, Hunt, Cox

Seeing as that team is so light on defender though I’d worry. Coleman can switch to right back if needed as cover for that position. I’m presuming Keane, Duff and O’Shea are going to retire given their comments in the run up to the tournament however O’Shea may stay on in which case he’d be a welcome addition to the above. Some talent there that would need careful guidance but the above have all shown class in the big leagues and would be more than capable against the likes of Austria and Sweden. Germany though are just a class apart and should easily top our qualification group.
