Open thread: What would you like to see from Ireland v Greece?

WHILE SOME WILL find faults in the team Giovanni Trapattoni has named for tonight’s visit of Greece to the Aviva Stadium, it is hard to argue that there aren’t a number of promising selections.

Four years on from his debut, the man who has been filling in for Richard Dunne at club level this season - Aston Villa’s Ciaran Clark – will earn his third senior international cap tonight.

James McClean and Robbie Brady should add an element of flair from wide positions, while Trap has backed his talk about James McCarthy becoming an influential player for Ireland by starting him alongside Glenn Whelan in midfield.

Sure, most would have been keen to see Wes Hoolahan from the start but he has been promised half a game… let’s just hope the Norwich City man grabs his rare opportunity to impress in a green jersey.

With Simon Cox starting just off Shane Long up front, Ireland’s team looks a reasonably good one.

Despite that fact, it is being branded as a particularly low-key friendly against less than attractive opposition and there could be as little as 15,000 present at Lansdowne Road this evening.

So, what would you like to see from Ireland’s last fixture of 2012? Are you planning to head along? Or will you even bother watching?

  • Goals, goals and more goals. And if Ireland score them, even better.

    • Either we HAMMER them 5-0 with some beautiful flowing attacking football.. Or we get totally stuffed and play like Liverpool and get a new manager..
I’d be happy with either really.
Come on ye boys in green/blue..

  • mcclean to prove that he is not a one season wonder. Clark to nail does a regular spot after a commanding performance. Shane Long to score and prove to Trap that’s he’s worthy to start.McCarthy to prove he’s our top midfielder, Hoolahan to get 45 minutes and George Samaras to score a bicycle kick but end up on the losing side.

  • It is the first international I will have been at, admittedly I’m a late starter! Hopefully lots of goals!

  • In my opinion the FAI is being run in an illegal fashion as under company law the directors can be held personally responsible if they do not take adequate steps to protect the assets on behalf of the creditors and by choosing to overpay probably the worst management team in Europe together with their overpaid board they are almost guaranteed to run the FAI into the ground. It would be interesting to see their Auditors letter of weakness if any to see what stpes have been recommended to the FAI. I am a lifelong fan of soccer but would love to see us hammered tonight to enforce the sacking of the Italian management team which should then be followed by the mass resignation of the whole FAI board starting with Delaney. He has nothing to offer Irish Soccer except apologies.

  • Its about time we are starting to see Crap use friendly matches for experimentation, instead of validifying his time in charge with our over-inflated World rankings ( which made no difference to this WCQ campaign as we were still 3rd seeds in the draw) while crippling and stunting our youth and development. Unfortunately it doesnt look like he will ever try more adventurous tactics though. He says we play a 4-4-2 but i dont remember a game in which we have played 2 strikers right up top, even against smaller nations. In my opinion we have always played 4-4-1-1 or 4-5-1 with Robbie Keane playing a deeper role. Crap cannot be forgiven for failing to utilise our best creative central midfield player who would have matched these formations and tactics perfectly. Weso will most definitely prove himself worthy tonight highlighting Craps error in judgement having discarded him after only 20mins of action.

  • Holohan should be playing off long upfront. Cox a championship player. Whelan needs to be dropped as dots Ward. Otherwise better selection by Crapatoni.

  • It’s been a terrible year for the Irish team. One can only hope that 2013 will be better, but with Trap at the helm that’s extremely unlikely. Hoolahan and several others should be starting tonight and I won’t watch the game.

    • We made it to the Finals of a major Tournament. How has it been b bad year .?? Hoolahan will be given his chance . Delighted your not watching it . I know there your view’s but they make no sense

    • Craig – It’s been a terrible year because we have been annihilated in most of our competitive matches and only managed to narrowly defeat ‘giants’ such as Kazakhstan and the Faroes. The consensus that just because we reached a major Finals it can’t have been a bad year is ludicrous. Hoolahan may get a run out in a less than half full stadium tonight, but I wouldn’t be optimistic regarding his future prospects. As for ur delight at me not watching – u must be easily pleased !!!!
