Open thread: how was 2012 for you, sports fans?

A sing-song in Gdansk? A goal in five-a-side? Or a winning Ryder Cup bet? What was your stand-out sporting memory then?

AND… BREATHE! THAT was quite the 12 months of sport.

We had the exciting, hope-filled run-in to the Euros. Then the, eh, Euros. The London Olympic and Paralympic Games with Katie, the rest of the boxers and even Cian O’Connor making a memorable comeback.

Lance Armstrong’s house of cards finally tumbled down around him, Jim McGuinness led Donegal to an historic All-Ireland football while Kilkenny again took the honours in hurling.

So let us know; what was your sporting highlight, lowlights, stand-out memory, be it an international rugby game, a goal in five-a-side or watching a loved one smash another pre-teen in an underage game.

  • Kenny Egan’s denim jacket performed better on the telly, than the Irish soccer squad did in the euros, what a bloody disaster that was!

    • My sporting highlights were:

      1. Watching a small island go crazy over a girl winning gold in one of the most unpopular least watched sports in the world, Female boxing. It was also great watching the Irish dancing on the streets, all so proud like Jesus had returned. The whole island thinking the world thought they were great, even though nobody in the world actually cares and there is no such thing as professional female boxing, thus why katie wisely chose to remain at home and make money opening chippers and shops. Professional log throwing has a wider audience and respect to female boxing. Only in Ireland, magical.

      2. My second highlight was watching 20,000 very drunk sausages singing one verse of a song repeatedly celebrating every time their football team were hammered. It was great to see them falling around the place like neanderthals, blind drunk thinking they were patriots going to war because they drank more than other countries, vomited more, shouted more. Most of which never attended a football game before in their lives, magical stuff.

      3. My third great sporting moment has to be how the country celebrated Rory McElroy, nominating him for awards, featuring him on RTE news every night even though he considers himself to be a very proud British man. Its funny watching Rory’s very bemused expression when he realizes that even though he has been proudly nominated for the British sports personality of the year awards, the Irish then nominate him for the Irish Sports person of the year awards. Rumour has it that RTE and the Irish media have adopted his tennis playing girlfriend as Irish also and want her to run as president. Magical and so wonderfully Irish!

4.My final highlight was the Irish participants in the Irish Olympics. Clowns that were so badly prepared and so unfit that they shouldn’t have been there in the first place. Ill never forget the Irish ladies repay team being interviewed by a bemused British reporter, they were jumping around celebrating losing, saying how they were just there for the craic and were so proud of being beaten horribly. Or the female Irish athlete who came telling a British reporter how proud and delighted she was with her performance, she came second last.

The Irish are so…funny. The world would be a lot duller without you little cute pixies. Thank you for giving the rest of the world a great laugh, as always.

    • @Morgan, whos Rory McElroy? I know of an Ulster golfer Rory McIlroy and a promising amateur Dermot McElroy. If you’re going to compile a snide condecending post, the very least you could do is know how to spell the names of those you are lecturing others about.

What makes you think you can’t be Irish & British at the same time in the same way as you can be Scottish & British, Welsh & British, English & British?

    • So pedantic, immature, insecure and…Irish. Instead of actually disagreeing with anything I wrote, the Irish correct typos and make comments about sex.

What a very, very unique people :)

By the way, tell me this. Why do you all fall around drunk abroad, vomiting and urinating everywhere, chanting football songs? Why do you desperately appear to be friendly trying to impress policemen with some drunken dance and generally behaving like really, really backward mountain people. Is it a desperate need to be loved and seen as the harmless Irish abroad, everybody’s drunken but simple minded friend? Or is it just having ‘the craic’?

Most countries and societies progress, the Irish it seems go backwards, in every way.

A Universal truth: BEING DRUNK, FALLING AROUND, VOMITING ALL OVER YOURSELVES, BEING LOUD AND OBNOXIOUS, DOES NOT ENDEAR YOU TO PEOPLE IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES. YOU LOOK DUMB AND PEOPLE PITY YOU, THEY MOCK YOU.

Its not patriotism, you are embarrassing

    • I’m waiting for some insecure simpleton with the typical Irish inferiority complex to reply with “Hey, everyone loves us like. The Polish mayor put up a big poster in Dublin saying how really great we were”

Yes, sponsored by the Polish Ministry Of Tourism.

  • I wasn’t too caught up in the Olympics to be honest. When it comes to teams I do support though, Ireland did terrible at the Euros, and Monaghan did feck all in football, it’s been a disappointing year in sports for me. Hopefully next year is better!

  • My highlight was taking part in the NASRPC Irish Open with ~140 target shooters from home and abroad. I even managed to pick up a couple of medals.

For someone who takes part in the sport it was a huge event, alas, not a mention in the papers.

I have no doubt it will be even bigger this year.
