YOU MAY HAVE caught Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s exquisite fourth goal for Sweden against England last night – and if you didn’t, you can find it here.
The effort in question seems destined to be remembered as one of the greatest goals ever scored (yes it took place in a relatively meaningless game, but so did this effort, which hasn’t stopped it gaining legendary status).
And with that in mind, we’re asking if you can recall goals that equalled, or even arguably bettered, Ibra’s moment of genius from last night?
We’ll get the ball rolling with the following stunning effort that can be seen below.
Best goal ever ? Well soccer would not be my sport but to my eyes that looked like a cross and not a shot …. so maybe a candidate for flukiest goal ever :-D
Seriously ?? You think that was a shot on goal ? If it was then his teammates would be entitled to think that he was a selfish idiot when he has players in the box and in the centre. Clearly soccer ain’t ur sport either …. think rationally …. if it was a shot then he is a selfish genius who doesn’t play FOR his team … If it wasn’t then he is a lucky player whose slightly misjudged cross from on the line went in ! I’d bet a weeks wages that not even HE claims it was a shot !
Ian, he hit it full blast with the outside of his boot on the near side of the ball to put a counter-clockwise spin/curve on the ball. That is not a cross, you would do the opposite to cross it.
I’ll take your wages. Cross me bollix, his nearest teammate is nowhere near the box. It’s a shot all day long. Everybody knows it. Feel free to get in touch about transferring your wages to me. I don’t mind waiting till the end of the month
Ian football clearly isn’t your game because that’s Ibrahimovic, he is an ultra selfish genius who constantly tries the outrageous, often doesn’t come off, but when it does…
Ok …. Firstly WATCH the video ! He hits it low and hard with the INSIDE of his left foot not the outside. Meaning the spin was clockwise … Meaning the intention was to try spin it clockwise which clearly didn’t come off ass he was off balance taking the shot. Look I really don’t care as I don’t enjoy watching soccer anyway and as you can see from my posts I’m not a negative poster. So if it makes you happy then it was the best goal ever and the player ( whom ever he is ) must be the the most gifted player ever . And I’m sure whoever he is he is up there with Maradona, Pele, Messi ….. oh and Johnny Giles of course :-)))
@Ian Perhaps this might help explain. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nHUCyNkezI FYI Roberto Carlos has scored many goals with seemingly impossible curl/spins before. If he hit the ball as you say, the ball should have curled OUTWARD. I think @Tom above has explained what actually happened. Ask anyone who plays soccer. Just my 2 cents…
Honestly I can’t be arsed …. It’s a game played ( apparently watched ) by over sensitive egotists …. If only there was a game where there was still a little humility in the players ….. Where they don’t go down like there’s a sniper in the stand when someone gets within a metre of their ankles …. where there is respect for the referee whether you are an under 12 or a 100 cap professional … Oh wait there is , rugby ! …. I could go on but what’s the point … football will always be played that way.
I remember it well. A wet and rainy June. He beats his man and 2 more and looks up, swivels on the sixpence and drills it from all of 35 yards. Masterpiece. Take a bow son.
My vote goes to the entire Argentina 2006 World Cup team for their pass and move goal v Serbia & Montenegro. At least 25 passes. Absolutely unbelievable. Watched it live and the lads in rte studio nearly creamed themselves. They should have competed better at that World Cup following the group stage.
Maradonna dribble past everyone and score against England in World Cup or the similar Messi one for Barca against some la liga team. Nothing else close.
Messi against Getafe, Maradona against England, Zidane against Leverkusen, are the first three that spring to mind. Maybe Zidane’s or Maradona’s based on circumstances and importance of the goal. Many great ones out there but those are the 3 I think of.
Tony Yeboah’s volley against Liverpool live on Monday Night Football was the best I’ve ever seen. Also, he scored basically the same goal off a half volley the next weekend against Wimbledon. If I’m not mistaken that was live on Network Two as well. A great man.
was it kanu who scored for Arsenal from a ridiculously tight angle?? that was good…although Ibra’s goal last night was quality…what about alonsos goal from almost at the halfway line??
If you’re going for a goal from inside your own half I would still pick Beckham against Wimbledon over Alonso against Luton, much cleaner strike and more difficult as the keeper was just off his line rather than running back from having gone up for a desperate last attack.
I would assume he was talking about Alonso’s goal vs Newcastle and not Luton, the one v Luton was a dribbler with no keeper in the net if I remember correctly.
Did Alonso score a another from the half way line? In sorry if I missed that, have no recollection of it, shows how much attention I pay on Liverpool!!
Not trying to trump Beckham because I love that goal. But Alonso against Newcastle is very much a similar goal. In fact I’ve seen Alonso have a go from the halfway line on many occasions! The one vs Newcastle is great though. Completely catching out Steve Harper!
Bergkamp against England in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley in 1993. The man’s technique was unsurpassed. Dejan Savicevic’s goal in the 1994 Champions League Final also deserves a mention.
Zidane against Leverkusen. Bergkamp against Newcastle and a few others previously mentioned.
Surprised Saeed Owairan against Belgium in 1994 hasn been mentioned.
Maybe not greatest goal, but remember watching match live, usa94, Ray Houghton goal versus Italy, fantastic!…shame to think they went on to the finals and we crashed out
Paulo Di Cannio’s unreal scissors kick from a tight enough angle on the left. Hits it on the outside of his right foot, from a powerful cross. Even with the ball at his feet I wouldn’t expect him to beat the keeper!
anyone remember pavel nedveds brilliant goal for juventus in champions league from outside area with outside of his boot with hardly no backlift on ball it hit top corner cant remember who it was against though, also di canio scissor kick goal for west ham was special
Chris hughtons goal a few years ago can’t remember against who . Steven Carr spurs v Man U . Cantonas volley v Wimbledon in fa cup . Cantonas goal v Sunderland when he lobbed Perez in goal . Van nistelroy v Fulham
Well it depends, favourite doesn’t necessarily mean best. I loved Cantona’s touch and volley against Wimbledon in the 93/94 FA cup game, were wearing the awesome green and yellow halfed Newton Heath kit, and although its only a toe poke from a yard out no goal will ever again mean as much as Ole Gunnar Solksjaer against Munich in 99. In terms of best, I’d say the Brazil team goal finished by Carlos Alberto in 70 world cup final or the goal that I think Cambiasso finished for Argentina after a similarly brilliant passing move in the 2006 World Cup.
Can’t believe I didn’t give special mention to the ginger ninja himself, Paul Scholes, got to give particular mention to his volleys against Bradford and Villa and his chip against Panathaniakos.
I love this one – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ECoR__tJNQ
Roberto Carlos free kick against France. A huge slice with his left foot from at least 50 yards around the wall. The shots from behind are amazing.
My most memorable Ireland goal is Robbie Keane’s 92 minute goal against the Germans in world cup 2002. The pub I was in went absolutely crazy for about 15 minutes after that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFQOoSUbnBs
Great goal, not the best ever. Van Basten vs USSR in Euro 88 has to be the greatest goal. That or Ole Gunnar in the 99 final (that’s just my favourite)
What about Mauro Bressan’s goal for FC Fiorentina in Champions League in 1997- similar to Ibra’s- the goalie was on his line though and there is absolutely no doubt that he knew what he was at- pure class!!
Roberto baggio, juventus v lazio circa 1992. I remember seeing him pick up the ball in his own box, dribble through 10 tackles and slot it past the keeper. Never seen anything like that before

I am biased but the one I scored in the school yard in the early 90s would be hard to top.An overhead kick from the edge of our own box……on Tarmac!!
Nice!
This is why we need cameras in school yards and a national youth academy! Jason could’ve been huge if his talent had been nurtured!
If that goal was followed by the words “Ohhh my f*$%ing elbow”? I scored the same goal
I’ve heard about this, I always thought that goal was an urban myth
Dennis Bergkamp against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.
love that goal.
The Roberto Carlos banana free kick from 115ft against France in 1997… One of the greatest goals ever scored
Tony yeboah’s volley for Leeds against Liverpool in 1995. One of my favourite ever. I watched it over and over at the time.
I bloody love that goal, almost ripped the crossbar apart haha!!
Personally prefer his one against wimbledon that same year.
Hey begrudgy that was the goal I was thinking of haha!!! So much power, that man was a beast! His pea stats must have been power 100 haha
Thierry Henry against us in the World Cup? Bring on the red thumbs bi€&€es!
Green thumb this man! He won’t gey away with this!
When was this?! Don’t remember Henry scoring against us in the world cup!?
Oh dear, Henry may have handled but he didn’t score, he pulled it back across goal for Gallas to tap in!!
Van basten euro 88 final…
Zidane champions league final, but this one is definitely up there.
Ryan Giggs amazing solo goal v Arsenal in Semi-Final of FA Cup in 99
I agree one of the best. A player who could produce class back then and still to this day!
agreed Ryan Giggs goal v Arsenal one of the all time greats
Best goal ever ? Well soccer would not be my sport but to my eyes that looked like a cross and not a shot …. so maybe a candidate for flukiest goal ever :-D
I see why soccers not your sport! If that was an attempted cross then Im Pele.
Er, Joseph, he’s on about the ‘impossible’ Roberto Carlos goal in the video above
@Ian – Are you looking at Ibrahimovic’s goal (hyperlinked in the text) or Roberto Carlos’ goal at the bottom of the article?
They’re both intentional. The clue to RC’s not being a cross is the venom he strikes it with – much too powerful for a cross.
Agree with Ian
Ian that just shows how much you know about football, take the blinkers off you do know that’s horse racing
…. Tony Watt v barca!!
my goal for bulgaria in the 95 mini world cup, absolute screamer.
I remember it well. A wet and rainy June. He beats his man and 2 more and looks up, swivels on the sixpence and drills it from all of 35 yards. Masterpiece. Take a bow son.
Ray Houghton necker stadium Euro 88…. Or Ronnie Whelan against the USSR..
Two Great Goals……
Wheel an didn’t even connect properly with his one. He even jokes about it hitting his shin. Absolute fluke.
Paulo Di Canio scissor kick against united was up there!
wasn’t against utd was against wimbledon
My mistake, you know the one anyway!
Rooneys overhead vs Man City. amazing goal.
Maradonna dribble past everyone and score against England in World Cup or the similar Messi one for Barca against some la liga team. Nothing else close.
Trevor Sinclairs bicycle kick for QPR, way better than that big lazy swedes.
Or his volleyed goal from left side about 35 yards out
Messi against Getafe, Maradona against England, Zidane against Leverkusen, are the first three that spring to mind. Maybe Zidane’s or Maradona’s based on circumstances and importance of the goal. Many great ones out there but those are the 3 I think of.
Declan. at last someone who knows football. these volley goals are a one off you may only acheve in one in a hundred attempts
Tony Yeboah’s volley against Liverpool live on Monday Night Football was the best I’ve ever seen. Also, he scored basically the same goal off a half volley the next weekend against Wimbledon. If I’m not mistaken that was live on Network Two as well. A great man.
Ah the good old days when RTE had the rights to live Saturday afternoon matches. Wonderful times !!!
Matt LeTiss vs Newcastle! Great individual skill, though he admits he mis-kicked the finish :-P
was it kanu who scored for Arsenal from a ridiculously tight angle?? that was good…although Ibra’s goal last night was quality…what about alonsos goal from almost at the halfway line??
That was against chelsea. Arsenal were 2down. They won 3-2 kanu’s was the 3rd.
Cheers Les…I wouldnt have the greatest of memory when it comes to footie

I don’t know about Alonso’s now I’ve seen it on the other thread, had Harper kept his footing he’d have caught it no bother
Unbelievable
My favorite ever was a friendly Van Nistlerooy v Juventus in 2003, like Van Basten in 88 but an incredible finish from and incredible ball from Veron.
Obviously a biased Here but Giggs v Gunners 99 Scholes v Villa 2006, Ronaldo v Porto 2009 and Ronaldos free v Pompey in 2008 deserve special mention.
World Cup final 1970, Alberto Carlos
Mark Kennedy against Yugoslavia at Lansdowne road 1999.
the hand of god by maradona, just because of the opposition!

Ronnie whelan v Russia what a goal!!!!

Fluke
John Barnes for England against Brazil
That was a cross!
This goal was a pure fluke. I don’t know what all the fuss is about.
Fluke or no fluke it’s still a goal!!
Rooney’s volley against Newcastle that interrupted his argument with the ref, and Bergkamp’s spin against Newcastle too. Nothing against the Toon.
Van basten 88 or zidane champion league final 2001for Madrid at Hamden park
Greatest goal EVER has to be Sergio aguero goal vs QPR made bubble up like a baby. That goal will live with me forever.
denis berkamp v newcastle i think it was, defender was still looking for the ball when denis had it in the net
Robbie Keane against the Faro’s … Unbelievable Tekkers!!! …
Great goal, not the best ever. Van Basten vs USSR in Euro 88 has to be the greatest goal. That or Ole Gunnar in the 99 final (that’s just my favourite)

Diego Maradonna’s dribble against England. My personal favourite. A thing of beauty.
Ginola vs Barnsley FA Cup 99 best I’ve seen live
Michael Owen vs Argentina World cup 98… hell of a way to announce yourself on the international stage.
What about Mauro Bressan’s goal for FC Fiorentina in Champions League in 1997- similar to Ibra’s- the goalie was on his line though and there is absolutely no doubt that he knew what he was at- pure class!!
Paul Scholes vs Middlesborough down by the riverside in 2000. U can hear the ping off the ball as he strikes it!!!
Roberto baggio, juventus v lazio circa 1992. I remember seeing him pick up the ball in his own box, dribble through 10 tackles and slot it past the keeper. Never seen anything like that before
