IF NOT EXACTLY a poor result against the side that finished fifth last year in the Premier League, Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle at Anfield halted a seven-game winning streak for the Reds in this particular fixture.
The home side peppered Tim Krul’s goal throughout, with Jonjo Shelvey particularly guilty of missing an absolute sitter shortly after Luis Suarez’ equaliser in the second half.

Liverpool currently sit in 12th place in the Premier League table, behind such teams as West Ham, West Brom and Swansea City, with their failure to find a replacement for Andy Carroll on the last day of the transfer window seen as the main reason for their dreadful start to the campaign.
Indeed, were it not for the goalscoring form of Suarez, they would be scrapping in the relegation places.
What we’d like to know is this…
Do you think that Brendan Rodgers’ oft-mentioned long term plan for Liverpool will see them challenge for the title in the next three to five years, or is this the continuation of a slump that kicked in during Rafael Benitez’ last season?
And…
Do the American owners really have the club’s best interests at heart, or are they just Hicks and Gillett 2.0?
The footbalk that is being played is much improved. Yesterday was a joy to watch most of the time. But it’s the same old story for Liverpool, can’t finish chances. Last season it was the post and bar this season, I don’t know how to explain it at all!
agreed, the football was fantastic, some amazing play. Gerrard, Jose, Allen and Shelvy played some beautiful passes all over the pitch…
Suarez is carrying the entire team… Shelvy misses sitters, same as sterling…. they are kids… it will.come for them…
what they need is an out striker, dare I say Torres-esq type player and I think they would be a very goood team..
Suarez is averaging almost a goal a game… imagine having another striker who could average 25 a season and another Gerrard type player who could bag 15 coming from midfield… they would become unstoppable!
Cant to wait find this mythical “out and out” striker, any realistic suggestions?
Personally I think we have one, his name is Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan would be top scorer had it not been for a rouge linesman last week.
What we need is for the burden to create to be taken off Suarez, personally I think Lavezzi and Muniain would be brilliant fodder for him, both industrious players with bags of skill and both flying under the radar a bit this year. Would prose a cheaper and easier option than a world class striker as well and less of a pipe dream.
To answer your question, no and maybe. Can imagine Muniain being the trickier to sign of the two if the situation with Llorente is anything to go by Athletic dont let their players go easy and if it they do its for a lot of cash (Javi Martínez)
On the other hand Liverpool could poach Lavezzi who has not been getting his game at PSG for a relative cheap pricetag our maybe like Sahin get him on loan. My point is these pose more realistic options to the world class striker that we already have that some are looking for.
Munian in my eyes will probably end up at Barca if they want him. I’m sorry I still couldn’t see Lavezzi coming I think he’s content enough to sit down and get paid a nice sum of money like the majority of players who are at wealthy clubs
Yeah, had a look at Muniain’s release clause its 36 million, could prove a bit steep! On the other hand Malaga’s Isco is 16 million another quality player who I’m sure is on Rodgers radar.
Sahin was 2011 Bundisliga POTY who then went to Real and sat on the bench on massive wages. If Liverpool can grab hold of him, I dont see why they cant get Lavezzi.
Mid table may be the position now, but despite what the detractors say it is not a mid table club. Liverpool still remains the second most popular club in Asia with huge global exposure thanks in the main part to the heroic 2005 Champions League win. Times are tough now, but run properly the club will always draw great talent.
This thread will be unfortunately be answered by biased supporters, so I hope I can give a bit of balance.
There is no way Liverpool will come close to winning the league in 3-5 years. They have some great talent coming through, but unfortunately success breeds success, and with the likes of Chealsea and City buying their titles. Liverpool rate of improvement will continually see them behind.
I am all for FIFA putting a cap on clubs spending I think it is a cancer in the game.
Clubs with no pedigree or history but wealthy owners are buying success.
Of course Utd are more than able to compete with Chealsea or City, but the reality is they sell-out a 76,000 stadium week in, week out. They have the biggest global merchandising of any club.
I just have a feeling what Liverpool is trying to do has come too late. To be honest ridiculous comments like “if we had another world class striker we would be unstoppable.”
City have 4 or 5 and they aren’t exactly convincing this season.
having a competent marketing division and millions of ‘fans’ all over asia is exactly the same thing as having a billionaire owning the club, both teams can afford players that other teams cant. the ‘morality’ or whatever may be different but the end result is the same, unless your team comes from the city it calls home then you are also buying your wins, these new rules in 2015 will cement the top clubs’ places and ensure no one will ever compete with them
All ifs and buts how do we know what will happen in three to five years Liverpool supposed to up the numbers in stadium to 60 to65 thousand supporters will that not make a difference city’s owners will get bored sell up and go else where
In my opinion 12th is about right. They rely on Suarez & Gerrard have signed some very poor players (Shelvey, Carroll, Downing, Henderson) & miss so many glorious chances it makes I wonder!
Nothing about QPR and all the players they brought in and the position there in don’t worry about Liverpool tony ur obviously a biased united supporter Liverpool brought in three players and got rid of god knows how many and saved I don’t know how much money yearly I think it’s 26million
Well I never said they were Rodgers’ players they are however Liverpool players & Borini just doesn’t look good enough though Sahin seems a decent player & Allen is okay though I’d see Lucas as a better option
Liverpool were one of the last teams in the football league to have a website. The seeds of the clubs demise were sewn in an inability to move with the times.

First correct comment on the journal from yesterday’s match. Spot on.
