Craig Bellamy insisted Liverpool should be pushing to secure a Champions League spot after their Carling Cup success.
Kenny Dalglish’s side ended their six-year trophy drought with victory over Cardiff City at Wembley on Sunday.
However, they did need to win on penalties after the sides were split 2-2 after 120 minutes.
“It’s not the end of the season for us, this club is pushing the players day in day out to perform to the highest level,” Bellamy told the Liverpool Daily Post, ”that’s what we have to continue to try and do.”
“The Champions League is the place where this club deserves to be but we’ve got to go and prove that on a weekly basis and hopefully we’re able to do it.”
Bellamy was speaking in the wake of the Reds dramatic penalty shoot-out win which came despite Dirk Kuyt putting the Premier League side into a stoppage time lead.
“I don’t know how it happened but Cardiff went and scored.” Added Bellamy
“I couldn’t really see it happening at the time but credit to them.”
Bellamy enjoyed a loan spell with Cardiff City last season, and said the Championship side were worthy opponents in the final.
“For me personally it’s great to win and great to win a trophy but Cardiff were exceptional and credit to them,” admitted the welsh international.
“I can only imagine the disappointment they had but they have to hold their heads up high.”“They’ve done a lot for the whole of Wales.”
Bellamy’s team mate on the day, Jose Enrique, was also revelling after winning the first major trophy in his career.
The 26-year-old Spaniard spoke of his relief at not having to take a spot-kick, revealing to the clubs website, his belief that he is not a good penalty taker.
“If I had to take one, I would take one – but if I’m honest I didn’t want to because I’m no good at taking penalties.”
