1956 - Kevin Heffernan set Dublin on their way to a third national league with a third-minute goal as they brushed aside the challenge of rivals Kildare by 3-13 to 3-8. The county’s first two league titles were also in the 1950s although this would be the first to propel them to a rare double with only Kerry, Mayo and Cavan achieving it before. That September it was Derry they comfortably got the better of in front of 73,371 people in Croke Park to wrap up a remarkable and history-making season that truly began on this weekend.
2003 - After a request from the DPP, charges were dropped against two students who had been said to break into Croke Park. They had accepted that the night before the previous season’s All-Ireland hurling final between Kilkenny and Galway, they had jumped the Jones’ Road gate and when Gardaí arrived they were running around the hallowed turf naked. We wonder how their heads were by the time the game came around.
