Giovanni Trapattoni’s side move up one place and are now level with Switzerland despite not playing in the month of March.
Elsewhere, England have fallen to seventh while Wales (41) and Scotland (48) are also up. Northern Ireland, meanwhile, are down at 100th.
Germany moved up a place to second while Uruguay also benefited from the Netherlands two-spot drop, from second to fourth, and jump to all-time high of third.
Portugal moved up two places to fifth, relegating England, while Brazil also dropped a place to sixth as a result.
Spain continue to lead the way while Denmark returned to the top 10 at the expense of Italy (down to 12th), with Argentina on the cusp (10th).
Scotland (48th) and Wales (41st) both improved inside the top 50 while the Republic of Ireland moved up a place to share 18th with Switzerland.
Copa America winners Uruguay are the highest non-European ranked team.
Denmark’s jump to ninth signals their highest ranking for almost 15 years while Croatia (8th) moved up two places and Russia (11th) one.
Romania (45th), Libya (46th), and El Salvador (49th) all entered the top 50 while North Korea proved to be the biggest movers, jumping 25 places to 86th.
