TEAM SKY’S Bradley Wiggins will wear the leader’s yellow jersey after sprinting to a stage one victory at the Tour de Romandie today.
The Briton finished the route from Morges to La Chaux-de-Fonds in four hours 50 minutes and 23 seconds in a dash to the line ahead of Dutchman Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoleil) and Italian Paolo Tiralongo (Astana).
Sprint specialist Mark Cavendish fell away on a climb 30km from the end as Wiggins, a leading contender for this year’s Tour de France, replaced Welsh team-mate Geraint Thomas as the Tour de Romandie’s overall leader.
The stage win was Team Sky’s second in as many days after Thomas triumphed in the prologue. Wiggins leads Australian team-mate Michael Rogers in the overall standings by seven seconds with Dutchman Bauke Mollema of Rabobank a further two seconds behind in third.
Stage two of the event will take place over 149.1km from Montbeliard in France to Moutier in Switzerland tomorrow.
