Kerry's O'Mahony played with broken leg out of 'fear'

The player took part in the majority of Rathmore’s victory over Laune Rangers in the Kerry Club SFC final.

KERRY’S AIDAN O’MAHONY has explained the motivating factors behind his decision to continue playing, despite suffering a broken leg over the weekend.

He told RTÉ Radio 1′s Drivetime programme that the ‘fear of letting his teammates down’ inspired him to play through the pain barrier.

The player participated in his side Rathmore’s 0-12 to 0-10 Kerry Club SFC final win over Laune Rangers, competing for nearly 50 minutes with a strap on his leg.

O’Mahony said he knew he was injured, but was unsure as to the extent of his troubles:

“The pain was fairly bad, I knew myself that there was definitely some damage there. With a dead leg you’d have pain but even in the first half, trying to run for a ball was very hard and I was very restricted.”

However, he recalled how he was determined to stay on the field for as long as possible, given the magnitude of the occasion.

“It’s a club final, you’re playing with your club and these guys have been training with you all year long. The last thing you want to do is let them down.”

The 31-year-old has been an influential member of the Kerry panel in recent years, helping them win four All-Ireland Senior Championships.

@Paddy: limerick favourites? You mad? A munster final and all ireland semi (even though I think there’s more in this side) I’d be happy with for this year

I was at the game. Limerick were very poor for long periods in the game. The team still appear to be preoccupied with possession hurling from the back( think man city). Offaly got great success from pressing hard in limerick halfback line and midfield area. Limerick weren’t clever enough to recognise this and see the space behind that press and were regularly turned over. The turning points were a missed penalty, soft sending off and 5 pointable frees by iffy.
