Olympic Breakfast: Sail on, Sailors

Several Irish athletes including Fionnuala Britton, Annalaise Murphy and Adam Nolan are in action today.

EVERY MORNING, WE bring you all of the info you need to make sure you don’t miss a second of Olympic gold.

Day seven brings a lot of interest from an Irish perspective, with Adam Nolan and Fionnuala Britton among those competing.

In addition, Annalaise Murphy is back in action again, after her rest day yesterday.

Elsewhere, the women’s soccer quarter-finals should provide plenty of interest, while the the first day of athletics is a more than welcome addition to the Games.

Top of the bill

Badminton

Irish interest may have ended with Chloe Magee’s exit from the competition, but there’s still plenty to play for, with the Women’s Singles semi-finals taking place from 9am, while the Men’s semi-finals start at 1.30pm. With all of the eight male and female semi-finalists ranked in the world’s top ten and seven of those competing ranked in the top five, the crowd in London are likely to be in store for some high-quality and closely-fought matches.

Swimming

The swimming has provided no shortage of drama and excitement in recent days, with upsets and broken records aplenty – and there’s no reason to believe this evening will be any different. The Women’s 200m Backstroke Final takes pace at 7.30pm. The Men’s 100m Butterfly is shortly after at approximately 7.38pm. Meanwhile, the Men’s 800m Freestyle will be at 7.45pm, and the Men’s 50m Freestyle is at 8.09pm. Finally, the Women’s 50m Freestyle semi-finals start at 8.25pm

Football

The Women’s quarter-finals take place throughout the day, with France taking on Sweden at 12pm, USA facing New Zealand at 2.30pm, Brazil playing Japan at 5pm and Great Britain kicking off against Canada at 7.30pm. Brazil were the pre-tournament favourites, but their triumph seems anything but a formality, after they suffered a shock 1-0 loss against Team GB in the group stages.

Who’s flying the flag?

Boxing

The round of 16 matches in the Men’s Welterweight take place tonight, with Adam Nolan among those in action. His fight against Russia’s Andrey Zamkovoy is due to start at 9.45pm this evening. Meanwhile, in the Men’s Flyweight, Michael Conlon’s bout with Duke Micah of Ghana is set to commence at 8.45pm.

Athletics

Joanna Cuddihy’s 400m race begins at 12pm, while Ciarán Ó Lionaird (8.05pm) and Fionnula Britton (9.25pm) are both competing  in the 1,500m Heat and the 10,000m Final respectively.

Sailing

Annalaise Murphy participates in the Women’s Laser Radial Race 7 at 1.30pm, and Peter O’Leary and David Burrows begin at 12.10pm the Men’s Star.

Ger Owens and Scott Flanigan are competing at 1.40pm in the Men’s 470 Race 4, while Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern start in the Men’s 49er at 1.30pm.

And finally, James Espey competes in the Men’s Laser, which starts at 12pm.

Equestrian

Anna Merveldt is the only Irish athlete competing in Equestrian today, and she features in the Individual dressage at 11am.

Do not miss…

As far as the swimming is concerned, the Men’s 100m Butterfly at 7.38pm should be interesting.

Adam Nolan has been impressive so far, so it’ll be fascinating to see if he can continue his good form in boxing against Andrey Zamkovoy at 9.45pm.

The Women’s 10,000m final featuring Ireland’s own Fionnuala Britton at 9.25pm is also not to be missed.

Brazil v Japan in the women’s quarter finals kicks off at 5pm with Martha and co looking to recover from the shock of losing to Team GB.

Men’s Single Sculls in rowing starts at 9.30am this morning, and should also be fascinating viewing.
