TRANSPORT OFFICIALS IN London will be paying compensation to hundreds of people stranded on a subway line that is critical to the upcoming London Olympics.

Some 770 people had to get off their trains and walk through the tunnels yesterday evening because of troubles on the Jubilee Line. The line is a critical artery for the Olympics, which start 27 July and end 12 August.

Officials said Thursday that passengers affected by the chaos caused by a stranded train will receive £40 in compensation.

Underground officials apologised, but the problems only underlined concerns about transportation in London. One big question is whether London’s vast and aging transport system will be able to cope with the massive influx of tourists and spectators coming to the Olympics.

  • Was in London yesterday? The cabbie says an Olympic lane is going to take one of the two lanes along the road running up and down the Thames.
No taxis, buses or emergency just 4000 BMW cars for Olympic officials and sponsors.

Would hate work in the city for the Olympics.

  • Just back from work…I take the Northern Line everyday and this indeed is my worst nightmare. Especially seeing as it was 28C in town today…the heat down there is unbearable!! The Jubilee line is a total joke…always has problems with delays and the like.

  • London is always on the edge of chaos. If the central line is delayed the build up of people on the platforms becomes dangerous within minutes, and the entrances are closed, roadworks and street closures can cause knock on effects throughout the city for an entire day. The Olympics could add to this enormously. As for tourism etc. London is fully booked in the summer anyway, it really does not have enough hotels, the Olympics will merely serve to create a shortage for everyone else. Tourists and business travellers.

  • I’m curious, how are they gonna identify who exactly had to walk through the tunnels in order to pay the compo?

  • Funnily enough I just watched a programme on nat geo all about the overdue earthquake threat to London. Basically there have been two 5.8s in 1382 and 1580, it is a regular geological occurrence that will happen again , it’s not as case of if but when. When it does occur the programme made a valid point about being underground and thus closer to the action so to speak. Basically they demonstrated the utter carnage that would occur on the tube, not pretty!

  • I has been observer that on the ring road around London that a crash in the morning causes a slowdown in traffic all through the day.

The slow down kinda “ripples” through traffic for the full day and can be monitored by traffic control.
