EVERY MORNING, WE bring you all of the info you need to make sure you don’t miss a second of Olympic gold.
The weekend may be over but the Olympics is still here — thankfully. If you’re looking to strategically plan a mid-morning coffee break or trip to the “photocopier”, you’ll need to choose your moment carefully. There’s a whole lot of sport going on with plenty of Team Ireland in action.
Here’s what we’ve got lined up for day three in London.
Top of the bill
Pool sharks If it seems like we’ve scarcely stopped talking about Ryan Lochte and Missy Franklin since Saturday, that’s because we haven’t. Team USA’s golden boy and girl are back in the water tonight when they’ll be on the hunt for individual gold in the men’s 200m freestyle (7.43pm) and women’s 100m backstroke (7.51pm) respectively. Don’t forget about Michael Phelps either — the double Olympic champ is out for a historic three-peat when the heats of the 200m butterfly get underway at 10.21am.
Irish eyes Scott Evans feels that he got the best possible draw when he pulled defending Olympic champion and world number one Lin Dan of China in the opening round of the men’s singles badminton. Ireland’s top player is in action at 2.15pm.
Tom’s time In Britain, all eyes will be on the men’s 10m synchronised diving when 18-year-old Tom Daley takes his shot at sporting greatness. Following the loss of his father to cancer last year, Daley’s appearance is bound to be particularly poignant.
Serve’s up If it’s women’s volleyball you’re into, you won’t want to miss the clash of medal rivals USA and Brazil. They go head-to-head in their Group B match at 4.45pm.
Who’s flying the flag?
Sailing: There’s a four-strong Irish contingent in action in Weymouth today. Peter O’Leary and David Burrows will be looking to continue their strong start in the star (2.05pm and 3.20pm); Dubliner Annalise Murphy starts her laser radial campaign (12.05pm and 1.20pm); and James Espey makes his Olympic bow in the laser class (12pm and 1.15pm)
Equestrian: It’s cross-country day in the eventing competition. Camilla Speirs, Aoife Clarke, Mark Kyle, Joseph Murphy and Michael Ryan will be in action from 12.30pm.
Kayaking: Antrim’s Hannah Craig will be looking to emulate yesterday’s success by Eoin Rheinisch in the heats of the K1 slalom. She’s in the water for her own K1 heat at 2.40pm.
Swimming: After yesterday’s disappointment Gráinne Murphy has withdrawn from the 200m freestyle heats, leaving Sycerika McMahon as Ireland’s only competitor in the Aquatics Centre this morning. The 200m individual medley gets underway with the heats starting at 10.41am.
Badminton: Can Scott Evans cause a massive shock in the men’s singles badminton? We’ll find out when he takes on Lin Dan in his opening match at 2.15pm.
