CASH STRAPPED RANGERS will play in the Third Division next season following a vote of Scottish Football League (SFL) clubs this afternoon in a move that could have enormous consequences for the entire future of Scottish football.

Already expelled from the Scottish Premier League (SPL), following the formation of a new company or newco that took place after Rangers entered administration, they were dropped to the lowest league tier of Scottish football following a meeting of Scottish Football League chairmen.

Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan had said that demoting Rangers to the Third Division would cause financial catastrophe and a “slow, lingering death” of the Scottish game and said they should be dropped to the First Division instead.

But at a news conference after Friday’s meeting at Glasgow’s Hampden Park it was announced that 25 out of the 30 SFL clubs had voted for Rangers to be entered into the Third Division.

“It has been a very, very important day for Scottish football,” said SFL chief executive David Longmuir. “We have voted to willingly accept Rangers as an associate member of the SFL.

“The only acceptable position will be to place Rangers FC into the Third Division from that start of this season, 2012/13. This decision followed a tried and tested process

“Today’s decision has been one of the most difficult for all concerned but it has been taken in the best interest of sporting fairness, which is the fundamental principle of the SFL.”

Restoring pride

He added: “We need to focus on rebuilding our game and restoring pride in our game. Twenty Five clubs out of 30 voted in favour of the Third Division option.

“The decision has that’s been made is in the interests of sporting fairness. I am very comfortable with the decision.”

  • right place for them and sends out a strong message to other clubs that run things the right way. at least now other clubs in SPL have a chance of winning something and getting into Europe and getting the financial rewards that come with it. plus everyone thinks the SPL is doomed and they may be right but It could be a blessing in disguise

    a few things

The Scottish league may appear to be in ruin but it is the best supported league in Europe per head of capita. In fact, having attended a lot of SPL games it is very similar to the GAA in Ireland. it is a family occasion and just about every single town/village/city in Scotland has a strongly supported team. They may not be able to compete with other richer european leagues but go to a few games and you will see how healthy and enjoyable the league actually is. Also, it is worth remembering the Scottish population is similar to ireland’s.

Rangers have acted terribly over the last few seasons along with the likes of Hearts. They have abused the system to breaking point and deserve everything they get. Do not comment unless you are aware of exactly what they have been up to. it really is shocking stuff. Ask any fan of any other club in Scotland and they will agree. That is why the rest of the league voted them out and put serious pressure on the SFA to act in the right manner with a very real threat of non attendance offered by fans. If Rangers were not punished most games in the league would have been sparsely attended.

Celtic have been making very little money for the last few years and have still maintained a decent level of performance given the strengthening of most other european leagues. They have operated (just about) within their means, like most other Scottish clubs and deserve to reap the benefits. Think about it from their point of view. Their bitter rivals cheated for a decade and have been found out. Simple as that.

The current TV deal runs for another 2 years. That means the next deal will probably be signed for about 3-5. Rangers will be back in the SPL by then (most likely given their resources) so the argument that Celtic should have lobbied to get Rangers back in the SPL for the TV deal is absurd.

There are a lot of morons condemning this move and bizzarely bringing up sectarianism as some kind of source to the treatment of Rangers. it smacks of hypocrisy. As soon as Celtic act in any way they are perceived as sectarian. The people spouting that kind of tripe need to take a real look at themselves and ask who is being sectarian.

Ireland has a long and proud link with Celtic and beyond the drunken scobie in a Celtic shirt giving them a bad name there is a lot to appreciate about the club.

    I do not support Celtic.

    • I fully agree with most of what you said except with the bit about rangers being back in the SPL in time for the new tv deal. they currently have only a handful of players, the rest have jumped ship and no matter how much cash they have to finance the playing squad, there’s 3 problems they have to overcome first, the transfer embargo, getting players of a high enough quality who will play in D3 with no guarantee of promotion, and the the fact that most players won’t play for a team who have cheated on a massive scale.

    • agree with most of what you said. the tv deal will be a problem though. first if this transfer embargo stays in place, with players they currently have, they are not guarenteed promotion straight away to D2. second if embargo is lifted getting players will be a problem. not many will want to play in D3 when they could get a team in SPL no matter how much rangers pay them as has been shown by their own who have jumped ship first chance they got. also not many would play for a team that cheated on a massive scale unless they were badly stuck finding a team

  • Rangers deserve their punishment of demotion to division 3. All decent Scottish football fans, including rangers fans know this and accept today’s outcome. It is ridiculous the farce has dragged on this long. This has been expected since around may. Rangers will more than likely climb back to SPL, however what will be left is uncertain. The teams who voted them out of SPL had no choice but to do so, however some of the smaller clubs may suffer and go under, Hopefully the fans who were so vocal in pushing their club to vote against rangers re-entry to SPL will show their support where it matters, in the stands supporting their team, not watching English premier league games on TV.

  • This could be bad for Celtic and for the spl in general. The old firm games were the money making matches for all involved. Celtic will probably win the league for the next few years but without old firm games they will suffer financially.

  • No real Celtic fan is glad the Old Firm is dead.

  • It may be a blessing in disguise for Rangers. The people who made such poor decision are gone, as are mercenaries like Kyle “I supported Rangers all my life” Lafferty and co. They can rebuild yet at the same time they have a ground and support base to build then up.

I do wonder how long it will be before Sky want to renegotiate the TV deals?

So true. Football is funny like that. just look at Juve. Rangers are a huge club with a massively passionate support base. They will come back but sometimes you need to take your medecine. I wonder what odds you would get for Rangers in Europe by 2016?

    • @Richard, Never was that in to Scottish football. I went to Rangers matches a few times as a younger man with friends and didn’t like the political singing. For many of the fans traveling from the North it was more of an excuse for a piss up than genuinely wanting to see the team play.

At the moment if I was going to go to see live soccer I’d go see Cork City play because the LoI needs all the attendance it can get.

  • If half the money and effort that went into supporting and hating the Old Firm in Ireland was put into giving support to our own League it would be far stronger. The quality of the League of ireland is not far behind that of Scottish football as evidenced by the number of players who have played in both leagues in recent years. Last season no Scottish team qualified for the group stages of any European game last season until Celtic got through by default, while Shamrock Rovers made the breakthrough for League of Ireland in the Europa League.

If anyone can be rational about this its clear that what has happened is to the detriment of Scottish football. The current Sky/ESPN deal is now defunct because it contained a clause that allowed them withdraw if either of the Old Firm were not in the SPL. The loss of these funds will have a huge effect on the lesser clubs of the SPL while Celtic’s financial wellbeing now depends on their success in Europe.

The most likely outcome of all this will be a two division Scottish football league by next season, if not before. No doubt the Irish Celtic fans will rejoice as the Bhoys sleepwalk to the title next season. Its possible howevr that interest in an uncompetitive league may wane as the season progresses. Wishful thinking I know, but maybe it might be an opportunity for LoI to attract a few of those who previously travelled regularly to Glasgow.

First of all we have our own indigenous games that are far far far more popular than football. In fact, I often wonder how successful we might be, given the level of athleticism invested in GAA. Thankfully it is of great reward but that is a different story.

Comparing the quality of football between Ireland and Scotland is interesting to think about. Then, you go watch both leagues and realise the football being played in Ireland is a good few years behind Scotland but catching up. European football is a poor barometer of a leagues strength if you ask me but I admit Scotland have punched well below their weight recently. i would suggest their domestic ambitions have a lot to do with that. Scottish teams resting players for European ties ahead of an old firm meeting is not unheard of.

Your information regarding the TV deal is way off what I have read so far. Perhaps you have links? That really does change a lot if true. Celtic’s money does not come from Europe. They have over 30,000 people at most of their games. It costs about 30 quid to go. Thats good money. Thats what pays Stokes/ Samaras’ wages. Not the odd run in Europe, Solid support.

The split division is hated by most clubs. I reckon the league will give a 16 team thing a go once Rangers make the first div. Until then enjoy a more competitive league and seeing a massive crowd turning up at 3,000 capacity grounds all over Scotland. Like when the Dubs go through the qualifiers. No harm in the long run.

      THIS

This is the kind of comment that is all over every board and forum regarding Scottish football. It stems from the kind of fan that understands football via sky sports. Just because you only watch 4 games a season doesn’t mean the rest of the league’s fans do the same. The weird thing is if you don’t like it don’t watch it. Just change the channel.

  • A very bad day for Scottish football, with rangers gone its just a one horse race at the top so even less competitive football for celtic now.. some decent money really needs to be injected in the other clubs if there’s to be any competition in the league otherwise its all a bit pointless..

    • emmomac 14/07/12 #

ah yes a brilliantly bland view of the league. Tell me, what money do you refer to? On what grounds do you inject? Maybe you can inject something else? Some whipped cream? Maybe some haggis?

This is probably one of Scottish football’s finest hours. They have outed a cheat and punished them accordingly. Ireland could learn from this kind of concise decision making at the highest level. Imagine the backlash (and rightly so) if the SFA decided to allow Rangers back into the SPL. I reckon the likes of John Stenson would still bitch.

      Sake.

  • Emmomac, my point is that Scottish football it is going to be less competitive. Like in the past if someone asked the question “Who do you think will win SPL?” They would say either Celtic or Rangers. Now with Rangers banished to D3, It is all Celtic and there is nobody up to their level. And yes ok I only watched 4 games a season in previous years but this year I won’t watch anything because the SPL is a silly league. I think Scottish teams should be brought to English Leagues.

fair enough. I think the main obstacle to merging the leagues would be the danger of losing their autonomy internationally. Say like a team GB at the Olympics scenario. The Scottish FA are dead against that and almost pulled out of the Olympic team because of it.
