Off the record: sports stories you might have missed this weekend

Muhammad Ali parties in Vegas at 70, Noel Gallagher could’ve been a GAA star and… gather ’round for Tim Tebow’s story time!

UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN glued to the internet all weekend, there’s a chance that some weird and wonderful sporting tidbits might have slipped through the cracks. Here’s a run-down of some of our favourites…

1. #THE GREATEST A host of stars from the sporting and entertainment worlds turned up for Muhammad Ali’s birthday bash in Las Vegas on Saturday night.  David Beckham gave a slightly cheesy speech on the man known as ‘The Greatest’ before Stevie Wonder sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Ali, who turned 70 last month.

2. #STREAKER Liverpool were home and dry in their FA Cup tie with Brighton when a bald, middle-aged man decided to join the action in nothing but a pair of shoes and socks yesterday. It is less than a month since the Anfield Cat incident but the Reds bench found the funny side to it and even got a chuckle out of an embrace between the streaker and Jamie Carragher.

3. #SLAM DUNK Gabe York is a name you should look out for in the future if this video is anything to go by. The 6ft 2in college basketballer, who was playing for California’s Orange Lutheran against Dana Hills, manages to elevate above his opposite number for one of the best dunks we’ve seen in quite awhile.

4. #NOEL GALLAGHER He’s more accustomed to packing out stadiums than playing in them but Noel Gallagher relived his Gaelic football days on the Late Late Show on Friday night. The former Oasis member, who played Dublin’s O2 Arena on the same night, told Ryan Tubridy that he competed at Croke Park in a couple of challenges matches for a GAA club from his native Manchester. Gallagher, whose parents are from Mayo and Meath, was also presented a jersey by the Dublin football team. Full interview below (see 3:11).

5. #STORY TIME If Tim Tebow’s NFL career flops anytime soon, he can always take up story-telling on children’s television. The Denver Broncos quarter-back reads Dr Seuss classic ‘Green Eggs and Ham?” as part of an initiative to encourage kids to read more.
