Off the Record: 5 sporting stories you may have missed this weekend

Including some seriously meta slam dunking and a rather unexpected boxing reunion.

UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN glued to the internet all weekend, there’s a chance that some weird and wonderful sporting tidbits might have slipped through the cracks. Here’s a run-down of some of the stories you may have missed.

1. DUNKIN’ All we’ve heard from anyone who watched the NBA’s Slam Dunk contest on Saturday night was how unremittingly awful it was. If that’s the case, then this from Jeremy Evans must have been the highlight of the night. Because, you know, it’s a guy dunking over a portrait of himself dunking.

Meta.

2. SHAKIN’ Ok, chances are that you haven’t really missed any Harlem Shake videos. They’ve been pretty inescapable and missed is a strong word.

But the latest internet craze seemed to pass the point of no return yesterday. First, we had this video from the Welsh Open snooker (snooker!):

Then the players from Derry City contributed this probably-NSFW version. Who cares if they didn’t have the proper music?

3. SCORIN’ Here’s something you might not have known — if you score an own goal in ice hockey, it doesn’t get credited to you. Instead, it goes to the last opposing player to touch the ball (how much would Jamie Carragher love this rule?)

So when this happened in a minor league game between the Cincinnati Cyclones and the Trenton Titans last Friday, it was Cyclones keeper Brian Foster who got the credit for the goal. Nice work.

4. MESSIN’ Another weekend, another milestone for Lionel Messi. This time it was his 300th — and then his 301st — goals for Barcelona.

Normally we hate the music that people put on YouTube videos of goals but this seems strangely fitting.

5. HUGGIN’ Yes, that is Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield hugging it out. No, we don’t know why.
