IRISH INTERNATIONAL DARREN O’Dea is set to join an unidentified club in Ukraine after leaving Toronto FC, the Canadian club’s manager has indicated.
Speaking to reporters after Toronto’s 3-0 defeat by Sporting Kansas City, coach Ryan Nelsen suggested the move was as a result of O’Dea’s excessive wages rather than owing to poor performances.
“Darren has moved on. He got a contract from Ukraine that he couldn’t turn down,” he told Toronto FC’s official website. “Darren’s the most expensive player in the whole of the league, in terms of salary cap. It frees up some space for us. He wanted to go, it was a good opportunity for him.
“Unfortunately for Darren it’s not his fault. His contract was pretty ridiculous, in terms of MLS contracts.”
O’Dea has 19 Ireland caps and started his career at Celtic, before signing a reportedly lucrative deal with the North American club.
Despite Nelsen’s suggestions to the contrary, O’Dea previously suggested on Twitter that he was reluctant to leave Toronto.
