Now Gary Cahill is out of England's injury-ravaged Euro 2012 squad

The former Bolton man was hurt in a collision with his own goalkeeper Joe Hart during the 1-0 win over Belgium at Wembley yesterday.

CHELSEA CENTRE-HALF Gary Cahill has been ruled out of England’s Euro 2012 campaign with a double fracture of the jaw, the Football Association announced today.

The former Bolton man was injured in a collision with his own goalkeeper Joe Hart during the 1-0 win over Belgium at Wembley yesterday.

A scan today revealed the extent of the damage and he joins the likes of Frank Lampard as late injury withdrawals.

Manager Roy Hodgson has called up young Liverpool defender Martin Kelly as a replacement.  Former skipper Rio Ferdinand has been snubbed — having been told that he was excluded from the original squad for ‘footballing reasons’.

John Terry will face charges that he allegedly racially abused Anton Ferdinand, a brother of the Manchester United star, in a game with QPR last October. Rio Ferdinand tweeted: “What reasons????!!!!” moments after the decision to call on Kelly was made public.

“Gary Cahill has been withdrawn from England’s Euro 2012 squad following the injury he suffered in the match against Belgium,” the FA statement reads.

“The Chelsea defender has two fractures of his jaw, one either side. The England medical team have been in close contact overnight with Cahill’s club doctors who will treat him moving forward. Liverpool defender Martin Kelly will be called into the squad — subject to agreement from UEFA’s medical team.

“Kelly trained with the England players last week and was part of the group that travelled to Norway (where England won 1-0 in Oslo to give Hodgson a win in his first game as England boss).”

Some good news on the injury front did arrive Sunday when Terry, Cahill’s Chelsea and England central defensive colleague, was passed fit — for the time being at least — after suffering a hamstring problem against Belgium.

“John Terry has been scanned this morning and given the all-clear,” the FA said. “He will be re-assessed on Tuesday when the team regroup.”

Saturday’s match was England’s last before they begin their Euro 2012 Group D campaign against France in Donetsk on 11 June.

Agreed Richard, Terry has influence on the England level too. Shows Hodgson to be weak doesn’t it? No wonder he couldn’t control the anfield dressing room. Home early me thinks.

Someone needs to tell Hodgson he’s not the manager of Liverpool anymore

I’m a Liverpool fan but bringing Martin Kelly into the squad instead of Ferdinand is a joke.
Micah Richards only has himself to blame as he didn’t want to be on the standby squad so he’s not part of the argument.
I’m stunned Hodgson has stood up for John Terry in this situation. Never mind him being a dreadful human being, he had an awful run in. Especially his performance against barca and Liverpool. He’s not the player he used to be.
I understand innocent till proven guilty but delaying the court case till after the Euro’s and leaving the (alleged) victims brother at home is disgusting.
I cannot believe the amount of players Liverpool have in the squad!

With a bit of luck Ferg, the course will give Terry a dose of harsh reality.

I hope so Leslie. I’m sure even Chelsea fans hope so too. He’s indefensible as a human being.

The team is littered with injuries and Rio is injury-prone, makes sense not to pick him. Plus Hodgson is trying to bring more young players in to build the future team. Rio has had plenty of chances, now it’s Kelly’s chance.

I’d rather have a world class centre back with a few injuries in his record than a young promising right back when replacing another centre back.

Very bizarre call up, Hodgson has a case to answer I think.
