MELANIE NOCHER SECURED an encouraging victory in the Women’s 200m freestyle at the Celtic Tri-Nations, which took place in the National Aquatic Centre yesterday.

Nocher finished with a time of 2.00.89, beating Scotland’s Hannah Miley by 0.07s, while Sian Morgan of Wales came third with a time of 2.03.64.

Following her win, Nocher told reporters: “It was really good, I was really happy with my swim. I had to go out really hard. I think Hannah and I helped to push each other, I helped her out in the first 100 and she helped me out in the second half.”

She will be competing in the 200m backstroke today, needing the FINA A-time to secure Olympic qualification.

Elsewhere, Karl Burdis took gold in the Men’s 100m backstroke in a race that also featured Kilkenny’s David Prendergast, who finished third.

And in the Women’s 100m backstroke, Jane Roberts took silver, behind Spain’s Mercedes Peris.
