Nocher falls short of Olympic qualification, despite victory

The 23-year-old still has an opportunity to qualify at the upcoming European Championships.

MELANIE NOCHER FAILED to secure Olympic qualification at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin last night, despite winning the final of the 200 metres backstroke.

Her time of two minutes 11.81 seconds was a second short of the minimum required to qualify.

“It’s pretty hard to do it on your own,” Nocher told reporters.

“It’s not an excuse or anything but I couldn’t bring it home over the last 100 and it really hurt.”

Nevertheless, Nocher still has another opportunity to gain qualification at the European Championships in Hungary.

Meanwhile, in the 100 metres breaststroke, Sycerika McMahon also missed out on qualification.
