GALWAY UNITED SUPPORTERS Club (GUST) have turned down the chance to amalgamate with either of the county’s other two Airtricity League clubs.
At a meeting in the city’s Claddagh Hall last night, a unanimous decision to decline the offers put on the table by Mervue United and Salthill Devon was made and, as their own licence application has been turned down by the FAI, the club will not be represented in the league this season.
It is a cruel blow for the Tribesmen, who were founded in 1937 and joined the League of Ireland 40 years later, and their absence for the first time in 35 seasons will result in home ground Terryland Park lying idle for the year at least.
GUST’s aim is to work behind the scenes to ensure that they can bring in sufficient investment and backing in order to make a return in 2013.
