GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI HAS left his position as manager of the Irish team “by mutual consent” and the FAI’s search for his successor is set to get underway soon.
So who are the leading candidates?
Martin O’Neill, who had good times at Leicester, Celtic and Aston Villa, is the bookmakers’ early favourite (8/11). Former Ireland manager Mick McCarthy (7/1) has also been presented as a strong option to take the vacant role.
Other names in the mix include Brian McDermott (10/1), Rene Muelensteen (20/1), Chris Hughton (20/1) and Liam Brady (25/1).
The most potentially divisive candidate is Roy Keane (16/1), whose international playing career ended in such drama. The former Manchester United midfielder has yet to convince as a manager.
