Here are 11 New Year’s resolutions for some of our favourite sports personalities
1 / 11
  • Jim McGuinness - reduce sleeping hours

With the manager having to divide his time between Donegal and Celtic, it's likely to be a busy 2013 for him (Image: INPHO/Cathal Noonan).
  • Galway hurlers - build on last year

Arguably the most likely team to end Kilkenny's All-Ireland dominance, they showed what they were capable of as they beat the Black Cats to win the Leinster Championship last year (Image: INPHO/James Crombie).
  • Dublin footballers - play with greater consistency

Despite winning the Leinster title and reaching the All-Ireland semis, Dublin were highly inconsistent last year, and will be hoping to produce more complete performances during the upcoming campaign (Image: INPHO/James Crombie).
  • Connacht - keep hold of star performers

Connacht have struggled to hold onto their best players in recent times, but more results such as their stunning recent Heineken Cup win against Biarritz, and it is likely to become less of a problem (Image: INPHO/Dan Sheridan).
  • Declan Kidney - continue to give youth a chance

Declan Kidney placed his faith in youngsters such as Craig Gilroy for Ireland's recent key international against Argentina, and was duly rewarded when the side produced their best performance in some time. This adventurous selection policy needs to continue in 2013 (Image: INPHO/Billy Stickland).
  • Warren Gatland - channel the spirit of 97

The last successful Lions tour dates back to 1997. Warren Gatland and his charges will be desperate to end the long wait to emulate the achievement this summer (Image: INPHO/Dan Sheridan).
  • Rory McIlroy - win the Open Championship

Rory McIlroy has already won numerous accolades in his career, but the Open Championship is one of the few that has so far eluded him. Winning this title would consequently be extra sweet (Image: INPHO/Getty Images).
  • Manchester United - wrap Van Persie in cotton wool

The Dutch striker has easily been United's best player this season. However, he is also injury prone, which means Alex Ferguson will need to take extra care of his star man (Image: John Walton/EMPICS Sport).
  • Liverpool - sign at least one striker

Liverpool have had to rely far too heavily on Luis Suarez, owing to their shortage of strikers this season. They'll therefore be hoping to acquire Daniel Sturridge or some other forward this January (Image: Neal Simpson/EMPICS Sport).
  • Giovanni Trapattoni - pick the best team available

It may sound like obvious advice, but Trapattoni has continually neglected to pick players who most believe are worthy of a starting spot for key matches. Ireland have a small enough pool of players as it is, and thus can't afford to ignore some of their better footballers (Image: INPHO/Lorraine O'Sullivan).
  • LOI officials - avoid another Monaghan-esque disaster

2012 will be remembered as the year when Monaghan United ceased to exist due to financial problems. Incidents like this one can't keep happening if the league expects its credibility to remain intact (Image: INPHO/Donall Farmer).
