Nelson Mandela
Mandela was the President of South Africa from 1994 until 1999. Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist who was arrested in 1962 for his role as the leader of the African National Congress' armed wing. He spent 27 years in prison and when he was released he led his party in negotiations that brought about a multi-racial democracy. For this work he has received many awards including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.
