National broadcasters secure rights to "Big Bang" title fight

RTE and Newstalk have both agreed deals to cover next weekend’s WBA Super-Bantamweight contest between Willie Casey and Guillermo Rigondeaux.

IRISH BOXING FANS will be able to watch Willie Casey’s world title tilt from the comfort of their own home after it was formally announced that RTE will televise the fight.

The man known as “Big Bang” to his fans will square off against undefeated Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux  for the WBA super-bantamweight title next Saturday night in Citywest, Dublin.

For long periods, it looked as though the fight would not be televised as extended negotiations by the fight’s promoters unearthed no willing buyers.

However, as reported here last week, a deal was struck when the promoters agreed to contribute towards the costly production fees, rumoured to be in the region of €75,000.

A statement from the station’s head of sport, Ryle Nugent, was issued through the RTE website this afternoon, confirming that the reduced financial burden had been key to the signing of the agreement.

We are delighted to now be in a position to bring the Irish public live coverage of Willie Casey’s WBA World title fight.

This has been made possible by Dolphil Promotions having secured independent finance to cover the associated television production costs.

It builds on our strong support of Willie’s boxing talent which includes our broadcast of his European Super Bantamweight title win last November.

The fight will be shown live on RTE Two and broadcast on RTE Radio 1, with coverage starting at 10pm next Saturday night.

Newstalk have also confirmed that they will be broadcasting the fight live on the evening.
