'My phone was hacked' - Aldridge

Ex-Liverpool and Ireland player expresses his shock following revelations after a surprise call from the Metropolitan Police investigating News of the World practices.

EX-IRELAND INTERNATIONAL and Liverpool legend John Aldridge has been revealed as the latest victim in the News of the World phone-hacking controversy.

The Liverpool Echo reports that the player got a surprise call from the Metropolitan Police telling him of the news.

The former Real Sociedad and Tranmere Rovers player spoke of his dismay at being among the paper’s victims. He said:

“You obviously are surprised. You are shocked that someone can actually do that.”

Aldridge condemned the paper for their actions and added that he didn’t know “to what extent I was getting listened to”.

The player, who at one time held the all-time goalscoring record for Ireland with 19 goals, currently does charity work and works as a television and radio pundit.
