Essential viewing: here are 10 people we’d like to see on the RTÉ panel this summer

RTÉ have picked some interesting guest panellists in the past, but who will they opt for this time around for Euro 2012?

FOR EVERY MAJOR football tournament, RTÉ unveil at least one big-name signing to join Billo and the lads on the panel.

In the past, the guest panellists have been interesting to say the least, with the likes of Graeme Souness and Dietmar Hamann adding to the already fiery discussions in the studio.

And speaking to TheScore.ie yesterday, an RTÉ spokesperson said: “We are continuing to work on preparations and hope to be announcing details soon.”

With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of ten people we reckon they should consider approaching:

Essential viewing: here are 10 people we’d like to see on the RTÉ panel this summer
1 / 10
  • Gary Neville

Neville has provided a refreshing level of insight into the game since becoming a pundit for Sky. He appears unafraid of expressing controversial opinions, despite the station's often bland coverage. So imagine what he'd say without the inherently restrictive nature of British football's TV coverage to worry about.
  • Jamie Redknapp

Redknapp's presence on the panel would be worth it for the comedy value alone. Could you imagine how he'd react to the lads' all-too-frank assessments of the England side?
  • Mick McCarthy

He's currently out of a job and it would be particularly interesting to hear his thoughts on the Ireland players, as he's worked with a number of them. However, of all the suggested choices here, this is perhaps the most unlikely to happy, given that Dunphy once called McCarthy "a boil on the arse of humanity".
  • Roy Keane

Another person whose complex relationship with Dunphy could prove a stumbling block. Then again, he worked with Niall Quinn after Saipan, so nothing's out of the question.
  • Roddy Collins

While his expertise may lie in League of Ireland football, Roddy always has something interesting to say and his fiery nature could mix well with the likes of Brady and Souness.
  • Brendan Rodgers

One of the criticisms of the RTÉ panel is that it lacks someone who knows what it's like to work in the modern game. Rodgers, with his well-documented tactical nous, could complement panellists with more traditional ideas of the game, such as Giles.
  • Stephen Hunt

Hunt has already made his debut on Premier Soccer Saturday, and should his injury problems fail to clear up in time for the Euros, he'd be another interesting studio guest, as someone who would no doubt provide an impassioned defence of Trap's unpopular tactics.
  • Arsene Wenger

A tad ambitious perhaps, particularly as he often works for French TV during major tournaments. But you never know, perhaps his old pal Liam Brady could convince him to appear on Irish screens for what would undoubtedly be compelling viewing.
  • Jack Charlton

Again, it's very unlikely to happen, due to the fact that he's been absent from football for a good while now. However, Charlton would surely be brilliant to watch, given the numerous anecdotes he must have from his years managing the Irish side. And he is (or at least was at one stage) good friends with Giles and Dunphy, despite their frequent criticisms of his managerial style with Ireland.
  • George Hook

Oh come on, who says you have to have a background in football to give an opinion on it? The inevitable arguments that would ensue between himself and Dunphy would be more entertaining than the games themselves.
