Murphy sets new Irish Heptathlon record

The athlete overtook Sharon Foley, who previously held the record, by five points.

MAIREAD MURPHY SET the new Irish Senior record in the Heptathlon at the Big 12 conference in Kansas earlier today.

Murphy finished fourth in the event overall, scoring 5399 points - the best-ever tally recorded by an Irish woman.

Her achievements were as follows: 100m Hurdles 13.88, High Jump 1.63,  Shot Putt 11.31, 200m 24.61, Long Jump 5.66,  Javelin 31.59,  800m 2.18.8.

The previous record, which Murphy added five points to, had been held by Sharon Foley.
