Munster’s playoff hopes take a hit as they draw with Ospreys in Limerick

There was very little to separate the two sides in Thomond.

Despite Ronan O'Gara's 100% kicking record, Munster were unable to pull out the win tonight.

MUNSTER AND THE Ospreys played out a 13-13 draw in their RaboDirect Pro 12 Clash in Thomond Park on Saturday evening.

Ronan O’Gara opened the scoring for the home side with a penalty after just four minutes.

However, the Welsh side were soon level through a Matthew Morgan penalty after 16.

Indeed the Ospreys took the lead on 25 minutes when another Morgan penalty found its way between the uprights.

Just before half-time, Munster drew level thanks again to O’Gara and a try from Damien Varley early in the second half looked set to give them the impetus they needed to go on and win the game.

However, Stephen Archer was sin-binned for tackling a player without the ball soon after and the Ospreys were able to take advantage when, on 52 minutes, Welsh flanker Jonathan Thomas went over for the score from a rolling maul.

Neither side would trouble the scoreboard operator for the remainder of the game, though it was the visitors who looked the more likely to score.

The result leaves Munster in sixth spot on 43 points with their hopes of a playoff place fading.

The Osprey’s, however, remain in fifth position, just one point off the Scarlets in fourth.

How Duncan Willams has a professional contract I will never know. Woeful to say the least

    • He’s had an awful season. He’s just not up to standard at all. For a scrum half his pass is awful — really slow and ropey. Can’t understand why Penney jettisoned Stringer and persists with this guy.

    • ROG had a good solid game despite the No 9.
His kicking into space was superb – even if it didn’t go into touch – was great for field position as BOD tweeted during the game. BOD was really annoyed at what the commentators were saying.

Still go with Madigan to start at 10 on Sat with ROG the bench.

Jackson is still too immature – we will need him in a year or to. No 10s don’t really deliver until they are 24 – 25 .

Sexton was poor at that age and look at him now. No need to rush Jackson – he will come good for us later.

  • Williams is just woeful… Sheridan on the other hand is someone that just needs a polish it seems. Interesting also that the scrum went to pot after Archers substitution. Hopefully an answer at tight head in the making.

    • From a Leinster fan’s point of view I’d love to see kidney back at munster.
I’m not sure if I could handle all the laughter though.

    • As a leinster fan i can take it that your only following rugby since 2009 so u don’t remember how much kidney done for munster i for one would like to have him back.. all the bandwagon so called Irish rugby supporters who only started following rugby when leinster won a heineken cup and Ireland won a grand slam (under kidney) seem to be goin against him now even tho we have so many injuries u take brad thorn, richie mccaw, dan cater out of the all blacks see what they can do same as o’connell, ferris and sexton gone from our team so keep it up we will take kidney back down here

    • Rugby changes ever season, the best teams adapt kidney plays a system that suited the game 6 years ago and hasn’t moved on since then.
If you want to go back to playing the old way good luck.
First of all Munster had some truly great players when kidney won the HC’s and some players who just suited how rugby was played. You don’t have those players anymore.
Secondly for some reason that has no reflection on results Munster fans seem to believe their current crop of players are top class, well they are not ad until you realise this well you will continue to be outside the top4 in the rabbo.
Thirdly if you believe that kidney has done anything to progress Irish rugby I’m the past 4 years can you please tell me because I can see nothing since the final whistle in the grand slam game

  • A woeful performance. Someone should tell Penney that these lads aren’t from Samoa and can’t offload or constantly throw the ball around. Some very poor skill levels on display, ROG’s last minute drop goal effort was appalling.

    • In fairness to ROG williams couldn’t pass water

    • So your comment is about an appalling effort from Rog. Williams did not give him the time to set up, gave a poor pass, which gave Rog no time. Yet you pick that out and state it as appaling. You don’t name any other Munster player. Rog had a great game, proving just why he is still a top class 10.. The pass that ultimately lead to Munsters try was sublime. Yet you make a statement about an appaling drop goal attempt. This is exactly the reason why I hate these comment threads. People like you with anti O’Gara b0llox

    • OGara time is up if you cannot see that god help us. It is time for him to call it a day. Munster were awful last week and this week they were worse, this is not good for Irish rugby.

    • He was the one who called for the pass. Could they not have gotten 5 or 10 metres closer to the line? He threw one good pass amongst a litany of poor ones. Wake up and smell the coffee, he is ruining his reputation and legacy. It’s sad to watch, truly sad.

Well I suppose Small Retort is at least consistent with his slating of Rog, regardless of the performance (pretty solid by most reasonable people’s standards, even if not vintage Rog).

If Keith Earls was on the pitch he’d be slating him too, not to mention DK. Old habits die hard I guess.

Shame to see someone like Edward jumping on the bandwagon though.

    • True Matt. Lets face it Earls never fulfilled his potential. I reckon Earls and Luke Fitzgerald traded their talent to satan for lovely haircuts.

    • If the pass was so poor why did he try a drop goal if it wasn’t on. Decision making was poor?
As long as o’gara is Munster’ no1 Munster will remain the 3rd best team in the country

    • Not jumping on any bandwagon, the 6N is over for us now nothing to be gained by playing ROG, we have to build for the future, BOD has said this it, DOC, POD, Darcy time up as well, Kidneys decision making Is appalling and time for him to go as well. Munster may be in the Q/F of the heineken cup but there form is not good enough to progress, munster need to get there academy right and start building.

I actually agree with you Edward – no point playing Rog against France or Italy now, might as well look to the future and give the opportunity to Jackson or Madigan.

It was the wrong decision last week though – if Rog had started Ireland would probably still be in the race.

Its a lose-lose for a coach though – if he doesn’t bring new players through he is accused of being too conservative, but if he does and the results go against us the nouveau-fans will be baying for blood…

May The Lord save us – so sad to see mighty Munster play such mediocre rugby. I only hope they can pull it together for the H cup. :-))
