Munster sign Donnacha Ryan up for three more years

The Nenagh native will be charging into rucks in a red shirt until the summer of 2017 at least.

MUNSTER RUGBY HAS announced the signing of lock Donnacha Ryan on a three-year deal. The new deal will see Ryan stay at Munster until the summer of 2017 and ends speculation of a move to France.

Ryan, who made his debut with the province in 2004, was linked to a move to Perpignan next summer and had been the club’s guest at a Top 14 match earlier this year. The Tipperary native appeared in Munster’s 18-17 win over Perpignan yesterday and has delivered another blow by staying on in Ireland.

Munster coach Rob Penney said, “Donnacha’s quality and versatility will continue to be major asset for the squad as well as the key leadership role he plays both on and off the field.”

Ryan, 30, was also “delighted” with his new deal. He declared, “It is an exciting time to be involved in Irish rugby and I hope to play an important role in achieving success for both Munster and Ireland.”

IRFU chief executive Philip Browne commented, “Donnacha has proven his worth to Irish rugby with his intelligent and high intensity performances for both Munster and Ireland.[We] are delighted to secure his future in Ireland for the next three years.”

High profile names yet to sign up with the IRFU and their provinces are Keith Earls [Munster] and the Leinster trio of Jamie Heaslip, Marty Moore and Sean O’Brien.
