Clermont 16 – 10 Munster
Good afternoon folks and welcome along to our Heineken Cup semi-final coverage.
Munster are on a mission in Montpellier. European away trips don’t come much tougher than Clermont but maybe, just maybe, taking Vern Cotter’s men down the road a bit could unsettle them enough for Munster to capitalise.
Paul O’Connell is fit enough to start, and he’ll be in the thick of things when we kick off in just over 10 minutes time.
The atmosphere has been cranked up, the teams are about to emerge from the dressing room. Here are the men we’ll be watching today.
Clermont: Lee Byrne; Sitiveni Sivivatu, Regan King, Wesley Fofana, Napolioni Nalaga; Brock James, Morgan Parra; Thomas Domingo, Benjamin Kayser, David Zirakashvili, Jamie Cudmore, Nathan Hines, Julien Bonnaire (capt), Julien Bardy, Damien Chouly.
Replacements: Ti’i Paulo, Vincent Debaty, Clément Ric, Julien Pierre, Alexandre Lapandry, Ludovic Radosavljevic, Jean-Marcel Buttin, Seru Nakaitaci/ David Skrela.
Munster: Felix Jones; Keith Earls, Casey Laulala, James Downey, Simon Zebo; Ronan O’Gara, Conor Murray; David Kilcoyne, Mike Sherry, BJ Botha, Donnacha Ryan, Paul O’Connell (capt), Peter O’Mahony, Tommy O’Donnell, James Coughlan.
Replacements: Damien Varley, Wian du Preez, John Ryan, Billy Holland, Paddy Butler, Cathal Sheridan, Ian Keatley, Denis Hurley.
KICK OFF: We’re underway in Montpellier as James kicks into the Munster 22.
Two more kicks are exchanged before ROG brings play up to the Munster 10 metre line. Brace yourselves, Europe.
A brilliant start for Munster. They maul Clermont in midfield and with O’Connell leading the charge, Nigel Owens whistles a penalty to the visitors as the maul is dragged down.
PENALTY: Clermont 0 – 3 Munster (O’Gara ’5)
From 40 metres on the left side, no mistake from the man in his 10th semi-final.
Clermont respond just how you’d expect them to. Battering the Munster line.
Keith Earls shoots up and saves a try with a big hit on Lee Byrne, but the home side persist and after going right, create a four-man overlap on the left. Nalaga shuns the props outside and dives under the posts.
TRY! Clermont 7 – 3 Munster (Nalaga ’10)
Ominous stuff from Clermont, they just seem to be settling into a rhythm and Peter O’Mahony is penalised for going off his feet.
From over 40 metres in a central position Morgan Parra sweeps Clermont into a seven-point lead.
PENALTY: Clermont 10 – 3 Munster (Parra ’14)
Tommy O’Donnell makes a powerful carry into the opposition half. But after Hines takes down Kilcoyne, Botha gets his clear-out all wrong and Clermont use the penalty to move back to Munster’s 10-metre line.
The line-out sets Clermont up for a maul. With Chouly wrestling O’Connell out of the way, Clermont progress to within 15-metres of the try-line where Munster add another offence to the penalty count.
PENALTY: Clermont 13 – 3 Munster (Parra ’18)
Despite Mike Sherry delivering the ball on a platter with a poor kick, Munster enjoy some time in possession after a Simon Zebo half break.
With the white shirts rock solid in defence, Munster are being made to look very static. The visitors manage to win a breakdown penalty and they’re in the Clermont 22.
A clever switched kick from James to the left of Munster’s 22 has Sivivatu chasing behind Peter O’Mahony. Clearly Clermont haven’t seen him play wing in the AIL.
Ooh, Jamie Cudmore is fortunate. The touch judge tattled on him to Nigel, saying he had come in from the side with ‘unnecessary use of the boot’. A double offence like that would usually warrant more than a talking to.
Chouly is all over the place (in a good way). Now he’s on patrol as Zebo tries to slip out of two Clermont tacklers to dump the Lions wing into touch.
Another kick from James. This time from 30 metres in behind Earls. The Limerick man maages to beat Nalaga to the bounce. But, sadly, it looks like a matter of time before Clermont close this out.
A massive stop from Munster here just as Clermont looked to pummel their way over the line before half time. A penalty 10 metres from their line relieves the pressure.
Tommy O’Donnell is a force of nature at the minute. When he learns to reign all that talent in he’ll be a serious Heineken Cup player. A minute ago, he was guilty (just) of taking Byrne out in the air after a smart box-kick from Murray. Then, from a Munster line-out he powered through the defensive line, but was penalised after receiving the first tackle.
Credit him and his side, refusing to take defeat on the chin here.
Munster ended the half by laying siege to the Clermont line. The hosts have hands all over the ball, but somehow Owens never raises an arm and after Kilcoyne carries at the posts, Clermont manage to steal the ball and scramble a kick clear.
HALF TIME: Clermont 13 – 3 Munster
Sky have kindly reminded us that “This time last year, Clermont led Leinster 13-6 at half time.”
So, there’s the precedent you need. Now if someone can grease up Wes Fofana’s hands that’d be smashing too.
The second half is up an running with Murray taking a high ball. He’s backed up by O’Connell and ROG slots a kick in behind Nalaga who makes a hash of the bouncing ball and it’s a five-metre line out for the hosts.
Brilliant defence from Bardy.
Murray gets a a long pass back t the pocket all wrong. Zebo collects the loose ball eyes a gap across field, but the flanker telegraphs the run superbly and forces ROG into kicking the ball away. Rather than pushing Clermont back into their 22, it goes out on the full and Clermont get off lightly after a very bright start to the second half.
PENALTY! Clermont 16 -3 Munster (Parra ’48)
O’Connell is getting a team warning from Owens here as Munster are penalised again for going off their feet.
That’s a big moment in the game, Clermont back on the scoreboard for the first time since the 18th minute.
Substitution: Keith Earls has hobbled off the field. Denis Hurley is in the game.
53 mins. Excellent defence from Downey and Hurley. First the centre stops his opposite number, Fofana, from trotting under the posts from a sublime reverse pass from James. Then, Auvergne move the ball left where Hurley managed to hit amn and ball to force a turnover on five metres.
That’s a killer.
Munster win a penalty just inside their half. The line-out on Clermont’s 10, though, is lost as O’Mahony juggles the ball on his way down.
Munster continue to carry the fight forward, but Clermont continue to thwart them.
Zebo, amazingly, rode a huge smash from Sivivatu and Munster had numbers in a narrow channel on the left. But there is no luck out there for men in red as Downey’s pass is collected by Brock James ambling back into defence.
And still Munster sit camped in Clermont territory. O’Gara grubbers a kick in behind Parra and Clermont clear a five-metre line-out.
There’s still hope of a big finish.
TRY! Clermont 16 – 10 Munster (Hurley ’60)
Amazing. Munster are within a converted score after ROG grubbers into the right-hand side for Hurley to chase.
The old dog for the hard road then steps up and adds the extras from a difficult angle.
Game on.
All the way through, Clermont have looked like they just might have an extra gear to go for. But it’s a risky tactic with as much nous as Munster have knocking around.
The hosts respond sharply, attacking Munster on their left wing.
The job starts all over again for the men in red. Every tackle has to be nailed on from here on in.
Munster win their five-metre line-out and after Murray attempts a quick snip, Zebo clears the lines as far as the 22.
No room for any fancy stuff now. Clermont are more than happy to scrounge a penalty from a scrum on their left wing.
But Clermont are feeling the nerves now and even Morgan Parra is susceptible. His penalty drifts right across goal.
12 minutes, six points. That’s Munster’s task.
O’Donnell kicks downfield and Munster steal. That creates all sorts of chaos as O’Gara dinks it in behind the Clermont line.
Jones chases, but the bounce evades him and the defender giving hop to Laulala.
The replay shows Jones knocked on and Clermont have the put in. But they are seriously rattled.
Munster? Well, the pressure’s off.
Stu Barnes continues to use the word ‘demons’ in relation to Clermont. This is a team with a history of falling at the last or second last hurdle.
This is intense. Clermont desperate to keep everything steady. Munster using Felix Jones every time as a strike runner and then ROG puts in a cross-kick to O’Connell on the wing, but we come back for a penalty on halfway. ROG pings it up the line.
Now or never.
No, no, no.
Conor Murray takes the ball away from his pack and runs into the blindside channel, but it’s knocked on and Munster have to start again from outside the 22.
Jones and Laulala attempt a counter, but O’Connell is inexplicably judged to pass forward.
And from the scrum, Clermont win the penalty. Amazing scenes in Montpellier, relief for the home side. Munster can leave this year’s Heineken Cup with their head held high.
That’s it from me and the liveblog, folks. Thanks for joining in and bearing witness to what history will either judge as the extension of the Munster legend or the beginning of a new one.
The end?
Hard luck Munster , Shame not to have an Irish team in Lansdowne on Final day.
Never a forward pass…..hard luck Munster.
No Way was that forward
Wasn’t even a flat pass!!!
Again Owens ruined it.
PROUD !
Unlucky Munster could have won it, dreadful referring by Owens, though to be fair better team on day won ,we will be back
PROUD to be red army
Magnificent effort from Munster..Clermont the best team in Europe.. special mention about Ronan ogara..a truly great player..probably his last game in Heineken cup..so close to kicking his team to an extraordinary win..
Great game from the ROG man today. Hopefully we’ll get another few miles out of him. Savage kicking
Come on MUNSTER!!!!!
Nigel Owens is ruining the game
Why??
That Munster team is one or two players shy of being world beaters!! If they play with that intensity every week they will win another HC in the next 2 years!
Come on Munster
Come on Munster!
ROG has the look of a man saying goodbye. Exciting finish, unlucky Munster!
Chillin in Montpellier . Great game, we lost to a better team and a fantastic bunch of supporters
As POC said Munster started badly and had a lot of catching up to do at half time. To their credit they came on well and came very close to winning. Clermont won because started well and Nigel Owens failed to penalise them for going in over the top and at the side at rucks. Clermont kicked 3 penalties to Munster’s 1.
Towards the end it looked as if Munster would pull off another surprise victory. If the ball had bounced well for Felix Jones, Munster would have won. If the game had lasted five more minutes Munster would have won.
I suspect that the the organisers will welcome the fact that an Irish team will not be in the final or win again this year. A final between a French based team and an English based team is probably best for the sponsors, the TV companies and the advertisers.
The consolation is that Leinster will be in the Amlin Cup Final on the 17th May and some Munster tickets may now be available for the Heineken Cup Final on 18th May.
Again another ref blamer. The MUCH better team won to be fair
A lot of ‘ifs’ in there David
Claremont really looked like 1/12 on fav -like fcuk they did – have you any clue as to what rugby is about?
Fantastic performance from Munster. Maybe next year
Can’t see ROG retiring , all the best to him if he does of course but I’d say he will be definitely back
The team for the future! Munster!!!
Unbelievable team. Serious effort
Clermont will win
Go away and support man u, BARSTOOLER!
I hope you’re at the game after that comment.
Will greenwood tweeting that Leinster are 2nd best team in Europe clown
If not second best then maybe best but hey we don’t need him to tell us that
Maybe but very disrespectful to be tweeting that halfway through Munsters games
Leinster probably are in fairness, however with all the changes on the horizon second best would be an achievement this time next year.
right, before the bitter thicks on both sides ruin this. best if luck munster
Sorry Elrat. Congrats Munster on winning a H Cup quarter final. Is that better. A very successful season. Same as last 2. Won f*ck all but your so proud. Put pride in your trophy cabinet. Red Chokers and cry babies.
James won’t comment on your childish rantings – now FOAD !
two h cups, 10 h cup semi’s, consistant q finalists, munster are the h cup!
We don’t want B trophys best of luck if that’s the standard you are happy with….
Blame the TMO or the citing commissioner again. O yea I remember you getting them mixed up last week.
Proves you know f*ck all about rugby.
Toulouse. 10 semis. 6 finals 4 cups.
Now that’s European royalty.
Red Chokers. So proud boo hoo hoo.
Phil you must be hurting another year with shag all go and watch leinster play rugby.
James how difficult do you find tying your laces?
Nathan Hines is a dirty dirty player – never liked him since he left Leinster.
Self diagnosed comment
Munster choke yet again.
Very original – you think that up all by yourself or dud you google it!
“Choke” what!!! “Yet again” what, what what!!!!! You’re obviously a rugby expert. How long have you been following the sport? Doubt you’ve managed to rack up a full 80 minutes on the couch.
Idiot
Ye and clermont have that soap in common!!! ” home and away”
You know what I think the greatest choke of the professional rugby era is Leinster’s 3 losses kast year…too a team called the operas or old oprey or the ospreys, sorry I’m not sure who they are they are so inconsequential! Now that’s a choke(:
Great Heineken cup Q final win. What’s the trophy like for winning that. Cry baby’s.
Big difference between choking and been beaten by a better team
Brave effort unlucky
The two lines under the pic of Zebo “the best team in Europe stands between Munster…….” how are Clermont the best team in Europe? What have they won outside of France. Surely the reigning champions are the best team until a new team have been crowned.
The reigning champions were knocked out of the competition two rounds ago…
Maybe you also missed the bit where the reigning champions were beaten home and away by Clermont?
It doesn’t matter. Leinster are still the cup holders until another team wins. Again what have Clermont won.
Yes, they’re the cup holders but they’re evidently no longer the best team in Europe.
As an Irish rugby fan I’d love it if Leinster were still in the HK, but they’re not.
How much I wonder did it cost Owens
HURLEY
Massive credit to the lads, Varley needs to go though. He cannot throw, bit of a clear out of dead wood needed, JJ Hanrahan has to be given a chance at 10 if ROG is retiring because Keatley isn’t up the the required level.
Go on munster
James, you are a bellend.
Chokers. But let me guess. Your so proud.
Are u proud of your team in the B cup? No standards that’s your problem…..
That comment was for James.
All the little 50/50 decisions are going against them, that’s sport
All the blaming the ref on here is priceless.
Nobody is blaming the ref for the loss, but it was a bad call at the death when Munster had men over. No matter. Ill still be in Dublin that weekend cheering on Stade!
Not because I want Leinster to fail, but because I have ties to Stade.
Eh, no! If ya have an aul scroll around the page you’ll find people are blaming the ref. just an observation.
You’ve had a bet Davey, fair play to ya. Stade won’t win the final though
‘Ties to Stade’ lol, yev had a few quid on them more like
No, not just that, but that does add to pleasing thought of them winning it.
Fair play, I’ll give you a green thumb for that.
Nicholas there are a few comments blaming the ref for a few poor decisions, which one or two led to Clermont gaining valuable field position and definetly in one case 3 points for Clermont in the following phases. no one is blaming him for the loss.
Swings and roundabouts sparky, get over it. The MUCH better team won to be fair.
I know the better team won I’m not an idiot. Somedays you get those calls other days you don’t that’s sport. I’m still a proud Munsterman. Best of luck in the Amlin lads and I hope there’s an all Irish final for the Rabo
Munster were awesome today. More to come from this Team. Proud Munsterman!
Owlyuwly
U think Clermont will win it?
I wanna fight Davey furst
lol @ Munster
B-standards not for the red army. Enjoy the dregs of European rugby… But really who cares….
Girly games
Munster couldn’t win the B cup last year either. Same old Munster, glorious defeat yet again. So proud of lads etc etc etc……….. Yawn
We don’t want the B-Cup. If that’s where yere standards lie fine go for it…. But Munster are not up for the B-competition. The futures so bright ill have too wear shades!! Munster are back!
Munster weren’t in the B Cup last year. You really are pathetic James. Leinster “supporter”? Speaking of chokers, by chance do you know where the reigning champs nickname lady boys comes from?
Munster are one of the consistent performers in the history of the Heineken (equalled Toulouse’s record of 10 semis today) with a history and support money couldn’t buy and no amount of begrudgery will change that!
Delusional. Munster will win the same as they won the last 3 years. F* ck all.
Toulouse have 4 H cups red choker supporter.
Maybe Munster should get 10 little moons stitched onto their jerseys to account for all their semi finals ?
Another one on the way in 2014 by the looks of things.
Have to credit minsters defence but their on tenterhooks! Some missed chance at end of half
The fear of the Leinster haters is so obvious here. It hurt them so much too be in munsters shadow that it has done permanent damage and the fear that Munster are the up and coming team is the Leinster nightmare scenario. But the red vibe is alive and growing!! Hey back in your blue box Leinster…. Party’s over.
Aux armes citoyens, formez via bataillons, marchons marchons!! Qu’un sang impur, abreuve nos sillons!!
James, Toulouse have how many? If you want to get into a pissing competition make sure you’re the biggest pisser in the house. Not the biggest shite talker. Dep!!!
Come on Munstet come on Munster come on Mmunster 13-3 down at half time against CLermont has there ever been a better script
They have to be lucky Clermont are too physically strong
Blame the ref kop on it was a forward pass . Munsters ball to hand isn’t good enough
2012 ?
