New Job

Mulholland takes the reins out West

The Galway County Board confirmed last night that U21 boss Alan Mulholland has been appointed to a three-year term as senior football manager.

ALAN MULHOLLAND FORMALLY stepped up to the top job in Galway football last night as the county board ratified him as senior football manager for the next three years.

The Salthill/Knocknacarra man becomes the fourth man in as many years to hold the post, replacing Tomás Ó Flatharta whose term was not renewed following disappointing Championship defeats to Mayo and Meath this summer.

In May, Mulholland managed the Tribesmen’s U21 footballers to their first All-Ireland crown since 2005.

Alan Flynn and Donal Ó Flátharta, two of his selectors with that side, are expected to continue on as the backbone of his senior backroom staff.

Although Mulholland was the only candidate to express an interest in the job, the selection committee made it clear that they would not be rushed into any appointment following the botched terms of both Joe Kernan and Tomas Ó Flatharta, both of whom only lasted a year.

Mulholland was interviewed by a five-man committee last Tuesday night before he was finally proposed and ratified by last night’s meeting of the county board.
