MOUNT LEINSTER RANGERS fairytale season continued today in Newry as they became the first Carlow club to reach the AIB All-Ireland SHC final.

Man-of-the-match Denis Murphy was the hero as he struck 0-11, including the score that transpired to be the winner with four minutes remaining against 2012 champions Loughgiel Shamrocks.

Murphy had also starred in the Leinster final win but all over the pitch Tom Mullally’s side showed a superb attitude that enabled them to book their place in Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day.

Loughgiel Shamrocks, who were reduced to 14 men late on when Mark McFadden was dismissed, had a last-gasp chance to force extra-time but Liam Watson’s free from distance dropped short and Mount Leinster Rangers were able to clear their lines.

Mount Leinster Rangers settled well and lead by 0-10 to 0-6 at half-time before stretching their lead soon after to 0-12 to 0-7.

Then Loughgiel received a major boost with a Benny McCarry goal in the 35th minute and they forced their way back into the game. Mount Leinster Rangers created another advantage with some superb scores by Murphy as well as Diarmuid and Derek Byrne.

They lead by three points with eight minutes remaining before Watson struck Loughgiel’s second goal to tie the teams – 2-10 to 0-16.  In a frenetic finale the teams swapped points before Murphy grabbed the winner.
