The Morning Score: Wednesday

Every morning we bring you bite-size nuggets of sporty goodness to have with your first cup of coffee.

EVERY WEEKDAY MORNING TheScore.ie brings you just enough sports news to see you through to elevenses.

1.#GOOD LUCK England have qualified, as group winners, to the knockout stages of Euro 2012 after grabbing a 1 -0 win against Ukraine.

The win came courtesy of a Wayne Rooney header shortly after the break, but the hosts should have been awarded an equaliser when Marko Devic’s shot crossed the line only for no decision to be awarded as John Terry had cleared inside his goal.

Read the full minute-by-minute account of how the action unfolded here.

2.#BON CHANCE If Roy Hodgson’s side should be counted lucky, then that goes double for France who qualify despite losing 2-0 to the already-eliminated Sweden. Are France now your adopted team at this tournament?

3.#POSTPONED Joe Ward will have to wait if he is to realise his Olympic dream. The light-heavyweight had hoped of gaining a wildcard entry to the games after he was controversially eliminated from qualification tournament in Turkey.

That hope is now dead as the AIBA have ruled that the Moate fighter is not eligible for such a selection. Read the full story here.

4.#ATHLETICS Ireland have named a 26-strong squad for the upcoming European track and field championships in Helsinki at the end of the month.

Fionnuala Britton is one of seven Olympic qualified athletes heading to Finland including Joanne Cuddihy, Jessie Barr and Ciara Magean.

5.#ONE GAME AWAY The Miami Heat are just one win away from claiming the NBA championship after a 98-104 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder gave them a 3-1 lead in the best of seven series.

Oklahoma will need to pull the series from the fire when they play game 5 in Miami tomorrow night.

6. #GAA The opening round of championship qualifier fixtures were released yesterday. Ties will take place on the weekend of June 30th/ July 1st and the stand-out fixture of the round is Derry’s trip to Longford. See the full fixture list here.
