More trouble for Wenger as Van Persie refuses contract talks

The Arsenal manager has compared his prized asset to Leo Messi, while the Dutchman has claimed he is too busy to enter into negotiations on a new deal at present.

ARSENE WENGER PROBABLY thought the season couldn’t get any worse given the numerous recent setbacks his team have suffered, but all of a sudden, more unsettling news has emerged.

The Daily Mail reports that the club’s star striker, Robin Van Persie, who scored twice in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Bolton at the weekend, has indicated his reluctance to sign a new deal in the near future.

The Dutchman has two years remaining on his current contract, and the club are desperate to extend the deal, following the loss of other key players such as Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri.

However, Van Persie attempted to play down concerns that his behaviour was an indication of his reluctance to stay at the club, saying:

“I can’t look into the future. I can’t see us talking now because we are so busy – we have games every three or four days.”

Wenger also attempted to quell fans’ fears and invoked a rather flattering comparison in the process:

“He isn’t a conventional centre forward. I see similarities positional-wise with Lionel Messi. He comes deep, he likes to turn up up front as well.”

Man City are believed to have expressed an interest in the player, however it is understood that they won’t consider making a bid for Van Persie until after the season ends.
