THERE WAS MORE Olympic qualification success for Ireland today, as Latvian-born rower Sanita Puspure secured her place on the plane to London in the Women’s Single Scull.
In a tense finish, Puspure narrowly beat the Serbian sculler Iva Obradovic to clinch qualification.
Puspure becomes the first female rower to represent Ireland at the Olympics since 1980.
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Sycerika McMahon, who secured her qualification for London 2012 yesterday, finished fifth in the 100m breast stroke final at the European Swimming Championships today.
Marina Urzainqui Garcia finished in first place at the event, while Jennie Johansson was the runner-up.
McMahon is not the only Irish swimmer to achieve Olympic qualification success of late, with Melanie Nocher also earning her place at the event yesterday.
Following these successes, a total of 44 Irish athletes have now qualified for the Olympics, while the finally tally of qualifiers is guaranteed to be over 50.
