MICHAEL VAN GERWEN made an astonishing comeback to claim the PartyPoker.com World Grand Prix title for the first time in Dublin tonight.
The Dutchman saw off Wes Newton in style last night to book a place in the final alongside the man who knocked out Ireland’s Brendan Dolan at the semi-final stage – Mervyn King.
And despite taking the first three games, the 23-year-old trailed his opponent 4-1 at the Citywest Hotel but managed to win six legs on the bounce to claw himself back into the match.
Van Gerwen, who takes the €125,000 cash prize and moves up to eighth in the PDC Order of Merit, completed the turnaround with a 145 checkout to win 6-4.
“It’s the best day of my life,” he said on the PDC’s website. “Mervyn was fantastic at the beginning of the game and I couldn’t concentrate but he gave me some chances and I started finishing better.
I’m not a person who gives up so this feels very good for me – I’m so happy to have won.”
