Michael Ryan steps down as Waterford manager

The Fourmilewater man will not seek to be reappointed next season.

MICHAEL RYAN HAS stepped down as Waterford senior hurling manager.

The Déise county board confirmed that Ryan will not seek to be reappointed after his initial two-year contract came to an end with defeat against Kilkenny last month.

Ryan took charge in October 2011 and led Waterford to their third straight Munster final in his first Championship season, though they lost to Tipperary and then crashed out against Cork in the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

Wins against Clare and Tipperary ensured that they preserved their Division 1A status in the league this spring but Davy Fitzgerald and the Banner came back to haunt them in the Munster semi-finals.

Waterford bounced back to beat both Offaly and Westmeath but after losing to Kilkenny in a thrilling Phase 3 qualifier, Ryan decided to call it a day.
