Michael Murphy powers Glenswilly to Donegal county final win

Ireland’s International Rules captain helped Glenswilly win today against Killybegs.

MICHAEL MURPHY ROUNDED off a dream weekend as he was handed the man-of-the-match award for helping his club Glenswilly win out in today’s Donegal county final in Ballybofey.

After captaining Ireland to win last night’s first International Rules test at Kingspan Breffni Park against Australia, Murphy switched his focus to club matters today.

And he shone for Glenswilly as he fired home 1-5 to help them secure their second county title, two years after their maiden triumph.

It was an impressive performance by Glenswilly as they had 16 points to spare at the end against a Killybegs team who had been chasing their first title at this level since 1996.

Killybegs had got off to a great start when Christopher Murrin’s long ball in deceived goalkeeper Phillip O’Donnell and ended up in the net.

Glenswilly hit back when Murphy struck a penalty to the net but then Killybegs bounced back to grab another goal from Hugh McFadden and lead 2-0 to 1-2 by the 15th minute.

Glenswilly recovered to gain a grip on the game and lead by 1-7 to 2-3 at the interval. Then they dominated the second-half exchanges with Neil Gallagher grabbing a goal after being set up by Murphy while Gary McFadden kicked some quality points to leave them 2-14 to 2-5 in front in the 45th minute.

Glenswilly added a third goal through Ciaran Bonner to secure the silverware and set up an Ulster club quarter-final tie with St Galls.

Best player in the country in my opinion, leads his country to victory against a professional Australia team then less than 24 hours later does the same for his club, even before his immense talent at football it’s his attitude that separates him from everybody else. Top class.
