More boxing success for Ireland, as Conlan progresses to semis

The Irish boxer beat Nordine Oubaali of France, consequently guaranteeing himself a bronze medal at the very least.

IRELAND’S PHENOMENAL SUCCESS in boxing at the London Olympics continued this evening, as Michael Conlan became the third Irish athlete to guarantee himself a bronze medal at the very least.

Conlan triumphed in a tense semi-final in the Men’s Flyweight against France’s Nordine Oubaali, winning 22-18 overall.

The Belfast-born boxer drew his first two rounds 5-5 and 7-7, before gaining in confidence, and beating Oubaali 10-6 in the final round.

He now will face Cuba’s Robeisy Ramirez Carrazana in the semi-final on Friday at 8.45pm. Carrazana narrowly beat the world’s number one ranked fighter, Andrew Selby of Britain, earlier this evening.

Conlan joins Katie Taylor and John Joe Nevin, as the only Irish athletes who have guaranteed themselves a medal thus far.
