TWO OF IRELAND’S young football stars have this evening signed for Hull City permanently.
David Meyler and Robbie Brady — both members of Giovanni Trapattoni’s national set-up — have joined the Tigers from Sunderland and Manchester United respectively, the club confirmed.

Both players have been on loan at the KC Stadium and have done enough to impress manager Steve Bruce.
Former Cork City man Meyler has struck three goals in recent weeks and signs a three-and-a-half year deal, as does Dublin-native Brady.
Hull are currently on course for automatic promotion to the Premier League, in second spot behind leaders Cardiff.
“I’m delighted to announce I’ve signed for Hull City on a three and half year deal,” Meyler tweeted this evening. “Looking forward to pushing for promotion starting Saturday! I’d like to thank everyone at SAFC for everything, also the amazing fans for there support over the past 4 years. Special club.”
Delighted with the signings. Both players, Meyler in particular have impressed and Brady will only get better. As a Hull City supporter I’m delighted seeing the addition of another two Irish lads to the squad. Keep an eye on Stephen Quinn he’s a solid midfielder hopefully see him get a call up to the Irish team soon.
Up the Tigers. Com on u ULL !!!!!
Maybe he has lived in Hull. Not all of us grow up supporting a team by watching them on a tv. Some football fans actually support their local team. Even if they don’t live in Liverpool or Manchester.
John got it in one there Barry. I lived in Hull for years, seen them move into the KC from their old ground in Boothferry and get promoted 3 seasons on the trot. Supported them ever. I lived in the city got to know some of the players and staff. You have an affiliation with the club and the people in the city, makes it feel more real. I suppose its almost akin to supporting your local GAA club or soccer county. It’s a bigger trying to get your local to switch over to the Hull match tho.
Like Joe as an Irish Hull City supporter, I’m delighted with these permanent signings. Not just as they are Irish players but because they are great players for the club. UTT
I studied in Hull for years before I started actively supporting City in 2002 when they first moved into the new KC Stadium.
Well as I said it was a serious question so thanks for the answer. No need for Johns remark which was almost like that of a LOI fan that hates the premiership. If i grow up in Ireland and start watching soccer when the best Irish player plays for Man United who are also on tv way more than other teams is it a surprise that i start supporting them?
About time Brady left to get a chance at some proper first team football. Should of done it a couple of years ago. Hopefully it is good for his career and for Ireland.
Whats your point Kevin. This is about these two lads and how they might benifit from moving clubs. I personally think its a good move and knowing more about brady if he’s playing full time He looks like he could be a cracking senior squad player down the line. David Meyleris playing well at the moment and hopefully he will keep up the good form which he hasn’t always done. Both moves are good in my book but I hope united have a buy back clause in the sale of Brady.
We only have to look at the likes of Roy Keane, Robbie Keane, Shay Given and Damien Duff to see the benefits of moving to “smaller clubs”. Much better for development in my opinion!
It’s a shame I didn’t work out for Robbie at United. I thought he would have been good for us. All the best at Hull, Robbie. Great potential, a talent for the future.
I don’t know who talks these youngsters into signing for clubs like man u, etc. only the very few will make it into regular first time appearances. Are these clubs blinding the youngsters with dreams? Is there some sort of emotional blackmail applied?
Generally it’s a much better move for these kids to step into the lower leagues, learn to excel there and if they realise their potential the bigger clubs will sign them. Brady was deadly v Greece and as mentioned above, this is a great move for him.
Even better, if the kids can get these clubs with traditional highly rated academies – even better. Young Maguire from Waterford should do well with the West Ham academy behind him.
That’s not the point. It’s about the young player. How much first team football would he get at Man U v playing at Hull? The player will only develop with playing experience, not sitting on the bench or even not making the panel. And not just Man U – any of the megabuck clubs, anywhere!
As I said, if Brady and Meyler are good enough (and most believe they are) their time will come – they are young. Hull could very well be a premier league next year – Meyler scoring 3 in the last 5, both players could sign with a top 8 of 10 premier team. And after that maybe a top 2 or 3 team. These kids need to play. Who is ahead of Brady in Man U? How many minutes first team playing would he get?
In fact you are agreeing with me in a small way. “come to old Trafford, lad. (and sit on the bench)”. Emotional blackmail ? It’s good for these lads that Common Sense has prevailed.
Training with world class players week in week out and playing with the reserves in a team like united is far more beneficial than being kicked up and down mudbaths in league 1 or 2
What a stupid thing to say Paul. Of course it’s the point. It’s next to impossible to make it as a youngster as a massive club unless you are extremely talented but they obviously have the best facilities, coaches etc.
No where would you rather learn the game some championship club or a club that’s one of the biggest clubs in the world under Alex Ferguson?
Brady is still young and will become a good footballer for both country and club.
Training with world class players and playing for the reserves is not what being a young footballer is all about.
They may never get to be a first team squad player and footballers want to play football. Go out into the real world of football, build up first team match experience in the championship – prove yourself like Zaha and make that £10m transfer.
All he’s proved is that he can beat a few defenders and score a few goals in the championship.Theres a big big difference between that and the premier league. Even if he signs for a premier league club this Jan there’s not a chance he’ll be anywhere near the first team till the season after next.
‘Training with world class players and playing for the reserves is not what being a young footballer is all about.’
That’s exactly what being a young player is about. Learn your trade in the best surroundings from world class players. Learn a bit of humility by playing with the reserves instead of forcing them into a first team where it goes to their head and they think they’re better than they actually are.
I still believe its the best way and haven’t all the professionals, agents and players agreed its also the best way by signing the two lads with Hull. Not to leave them in Man u’s reserves.
The irony if fergie signs Brady back in 4 years for £10m. Maybe Brady could even do a Pilkington v Man U.
Yea but he gets to train with RVP Rooney Scholes and Giggs when he steps up to reserve/first team training rather than Paul McShane at Hull. I know which one I’d rather!

Given the chance to sign for Manchester United, one of the most successful clubs in the last 20 years or Hull City, who would you choose?

The fact that Robbie Brady played 39 games for Hull last season doesn’t give you argument any real substance at all.
Then why did Brady leave – and Darren Gibson? They want play first team football?
Given a chance to play or sit on the bench which would you prefer given your job is a footballer not a spectator
Yea but he gets to train with RVP Rooney Scholes and Giggs when he steps up to reserve/first team training rather than Paul McShane at Hull. I know which one I’d rather!
Both championship players at best.
Aidy White – Leeds Utd !
Excellent Player. I’ve been hoping to keep him at Elland Road. Cracker in the Capital One cup against Everton!
Us ???
Two very good prospects, hopefully PL regulars soon
