TROUBLED EX-ARSENAL star Paul Merson admitted that he was “very lucky to have survived” a high-speed motorway crash after he fell asleep at the wheel in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The Sky Sports pundit was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after his Mercedes smashed into a lorry while on his way home from a charity event in Birmingham.
Merson was later taken to Warwick Hospital where he was treated for a cut to his head, and told the Daily Mirror that he was very fortunate not to have been seriously injured.
“I fell asleep and just hit the central reservation,” Merson said. “I banged my head on the windscreen and the car is a write-off. I’m very lucky to have survived.”
A police spokeswoman confirmed details of an accident on the M40 northbound involving a black Mercedes ML350 and a lorry.
“Following a roadside breath test, the 43-year-old male driver of the Mercedes was arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol. He was taken to Warwick hospital for treatment to a cut to the head. A blood sample was taken for analysis.”
The Mirror reports that the driver of the lorry, who is in his 50s, is recovering at home after being treated for whiplash injuries in hospital.
