McGee inspires Ireland to playoff win in Cairo

Ireland avoided relegation in Cairo today, largely thanks to the Dubliner’s performances.

A HAT-TRICK of wins from James McGee helped Ireland overcome Egypt 3-2 in Cairo, ensuring that they avoided relegation in a crucial playoff earlier today.

Despite weather conditions of up to 40 degrees heat, McGee secured a thrilling five-set victory over the course of two days against Sherif Sabry, winning 6-2 5-7 7-5 3-6 6-4.

Both Ireland and Egypt had two victories apiece prior to McGee’s encounter, which guaranteed a 3-2 overall victory and ensured Ireland retained their Group II status at the Davis Cup.

McGee had previously beaten Karim Maamoun, in addition to winning a doubles match alongside Sam Barry.
