“i apologise for my tweet last night, it was stupid, disrespectful and i let my frustration get the better of me which still aint an excuse.”
McClean had earlier in the week drawn further controversy by tweeting that he was fully fit to play in the World Cup qualifier, despite suggestions to the contrary from others.
He was left as an unused substitute for the game, with many fans and pundits believing he deserved to start in the game.
McClean has since deleted his Twitter account, following these comments.
Pretty hard to manage a team Graham if you feel they are all entitled to express their frustrations at not being selected to play on social media. Thats my point and its not about free speech. Its about a choice of staying on the panel or free speech about the team. Judging by the grovelling apology he was forced to choose and opted to stay on the panel.
Apologising for being right? Apologising for being content with second best? At least the lad is honest and saying what we’re all thinking. Nothing to apologise for in my opinion.
i wouldnt apologize for expressing my opinion, he’s the voice of the majority.. wont make a difference to his chances trap wont give him the game time he deserves!
Right so let’s do a vote with red and green thumbs before The Journal do an official one- I would welcome Mick McCarthy back as Ireland Manager…I believe he got the most out of the post Charlton era and actually did pretty well in Japan/South Korea
So vote with your thumbs people
Green thumb=Welcome Mick Back
Red thumb=not a chance u clown
He may have the right to his opinion, and he may even have the right opinion of the situation in this instance, but to vent it on twitter is just stupid and disrespectful as he put it. Good call to apologise. Mature.
Mick is currently 4-1 favourite to become next manager on paddy power. When you think of it, he played good attacking football, blooded several new players, and even swallowed his pride and gave players a chance he didn’t get on with. He excelled as a defender in 2 major championships and led up to a world cup where we narrowly lost out to the future world and European champions on penalties having outplayed them. Why does trap get so much leeway?
What the hell?! McClean has no reason to apologise at all! Its bloody Trap that should be apologising for not playing him!! Trap is a disgrace. Get out Trap
I completely understand his frustration, but taking his frustration to Twitter was a bad idea. Tapp now has a valid excuse not to play him against Oman on Tuesday. Trapp is a stubborn man who is not going to change his tactics. McClean is probably our best left winger since Duff was in his prime. We have good players, who can go at teams but Trapp doesn’t see that. I’d love to see this team;
Irish football team = utter crap! I really hope we don’t make it to the world cup because my head has just stopped hurting from all the cringing I did during the euros!
Trap and Delaney need to go NOW!
And don’t give me all this waffle about national pride and supporting them no matter what! BULL as i said above trap and Delaney need to go, and a the team rebuilt again!
We have a couple of great players and a few ok players and some real duds that trap maintains on playing! Time for a major reshuffle
Ireland are not olaying football just hoping on the Irish luck, they don’t take any chances. I blame Trap he has passed his sell by date we need fresh blooded coaches and manager. It’s horrible watching them they dont give any fight or guts
.
trap has to go … playing 3 strikers on.wing while McLean was on the bench , its a Fooking insult to the lad , he must have fook all respect in the dressing , a group of professionals managed by a has_been …
McLean is a class act in fairness. I understand the frustration he had but apologising shows a level of maturity way above his age. Wouldn’t be surprised if Martin O Neill had a word in his ear about it and told him to apologise. a manager like O Neill gets the best out f him because he can man manage him. This is one of Traps major failings in that he can’t man mange well – for example Ward, Foley, both Reids etc etc
People act like McClean is the second coming of Garrincha rather than a decent winger plying his trade at a mediocre club..
He seems to have the same inflated opinion of himself that Gibson does, a mediocre player at a midtable club who seems to think sitting on the bench is beneath him.
I had the same problem when I ran an under 12 team. Kids who didn’t get to play sometimes threw a strop. Their excuse is that they were only 11 years of age. McClean needs to grow up. He hasn’t played a full season in the Premiership yet. I would have brought him on for Ward and gone three at the back. We might have lost if Trap had actually done this. Would McClean have pulled that stunt with Martin O’Neill? The same O’Neill has recently bought Adam Johnson. He started both last week but that may not remain so. McClean may have to get used to this
a manager not only has to manage and pick the right team and formation but he must instill confidence and belief into the players. this group of players are withheld from expressing themselves because they are selected defensive players designed to do a specific job, to play as a compact unit, then when we do get the ball, It’s head up and a long punt up to the striker hoping that he will get a good flick on or hope that the defender makes a mistake. yes we got to the Euros with this tactic and we were proud to see the Irish flag there but seriously the game has evolved so much in the last ten years that it is easy to see that if u have players that are encouraged to actually get the ball down and play and keep possession, u have a much better chance of scoring and let’s face it, apart from the 5 or 6 top teams in Europe, there are a lot of 2nd rate teams that we would be capable of beating, so in essence Trap has done an average job so far but I think his tenure is coming to an end. I personally would go for David O Leary..
I must assume you are too young to remember O’Leary’s tenure at Leeds. Some definite progress but he ultimately brought the team to its knees and spent the club into oblivion
This is the bloody problem! Nobody is speaking out and saying how it really is! Why should he apologise, he spoke the truth, back to Italy for that deluded trap!
Why apologise for anything he said, he was right. It was what most of the country was doing too, f…… Fuming. In a game crying out for a winger we played at least 3 different strikers out of position, not to mention use one o the best ones in the Premier League.
Why can’t Trap just swallow his pride and play the best players for the sake of the team. Give up this petty carry on and do what you are been extremely well paid to do. If not resign and let someone else do it.
Can you imagine what Germany and Sweden will do to this team home and away ?
PS Trap might get up and maybe try attend a match once in a while when his players are playing for their club, it’s incredible, no other country would put up with this rubbish.

He was right. It was a joke of a performance and he should have started.
He can’t have it both ways though – in the panel and undermining it at same time. Stay and shut up or leave and tweet away.
no james its his free speech and he was right
Pretty hard to manage a team Graham if you feel they are all entitled to express their frustrations at not being selected to play on social media. Thats my point and its not about free speech. Its about a choice of staying on the panel or free speech about the team. Judging by the grovelling apology he was forced to choose and opted to stay on the panel.
I’d say Trap blew a fuse when his interpreter translated it for him.
The original tweet, that is.
Don’t know why he apologised – he was right.
He apologised because he’d never again play under Trap otherwise. He still may not ..
Ffs no need ti apologize, it was right.
Someone twisting his arm..? He only said what we’re all feeling.
Apologising for being right? Apologising for being content with second best? At least the lad is honest and saying what we’re all thinking. Nothing to apologise for in my opinion.
For the most part it was dreadful that team are 100 plus places below Ireland in rankings.
Is trapp another spoofer or just poor players ?
i wouldnt apologize for expressing my opinion, he’s the voice of the majority.. wont make a difference to his chances trap wont give him the game time he deserves!
Benitez to replace Trap?
Why would you want that Dmc? Has Benitez got some, as of yet undiscovered magical powers or something?
25th May 2005 -There was your magical powers!
Just like a Liverpool supporter, always living in the past :-)
He answered a question, big deal
Right so let’s do a vote with red and green thumbs before The Journal do an official one- I would welcome Mick McCarthy back as Ireland Manager…I believe he got the most out of the post Charlton era and actually did pretty well in Japan/South Korea
So vote with your thumbs people
Green thumb=Welcome Mick Back
Red thumb=not a chance u clown
He has to apologise for being unprofessional.
Even if he has a point, this should have been kept in house and not aired in public.
Could be the cracks are starting to show in house too,as it were.
He may have the right to his opinion, and he may even have the right opinion of the situation in this instance, but to vent it on twitter is just stupid and disrespectful as he put it. Good call to apologise. Mature.

What the hell?! McClean has no reason to apologise at all! Its bloody Trap that should be apologising for not playing him!! Trap is a disgrace. Get out Trap
No chance of Mc Clean getting a game now against Oman tuesday
night…
Might give Robbie Brady a chance now.
Brady wont get a sniff, he’s a good player only the average triumph in Traps regime
@Billie…Liam Brady would get a game before Robbie Brady…Trap doesn’t take chances…
@Billie, better chance Trappatoni would pick Liam Brady before Robbie Brady…
I completely understand his frustration, but taking his frustration to Twitter was a bad idea. Tapp now has a valid excuse not to play him against Oman on Tuesday. Trapp is a stubborn man who is not going to change his tactics. McClean is probably our best left winger since Duff was in his prime. We have good players, who can go at teams but Trapp doesn’t see that. I’d love to see this team;
Westwood
O’Shea, St Ledger, Wilson, Coleman
Mcgeady, McCarthy, Gibson, McClean
Doyle & Long.
Irish football team = utter crap! I really hope we don’t make it to the world cup because my head has just stopped hurting from all the cringing I did during the euros!

7 hours flying time, 5 hours time difference, to keep the bench warm? I’d be livid!
that’s nothin. McGeady flew from Russia to.. Dublin.. to go to.. eh.. Kazakstan. wtf!
Ireland are not olaying football just hoping on the Irish luck, they don’t take any chances. I blame Trap he has passed his sell by date we need fresh blooded coaches and manager. It’s horrible watching them they dont give any fight or guts
.
James McClean was right lets call a spade a spade
Mick is currently 4-1 favourite for manager on Safew
sometimes ya need to apologize when your right, having a girlfriend/wife proves that ha
trap has to go … playing 3 strikers on.wing while McLean was on the bench , its a Fooking insult to the lad , he must have fook all respect in the dressing , a group of professionals managed by a has_been …
McLean is a class act in fairness. I understand the frustration he had but apologising shows a level of maturity way above his age. be proud of your team through good and bad times.
People act like McClean is the second coming of Garrincha rather than a decent winger plying his trade at a mediocre club..
He seems to have the same inflated opinion of himself that Gibson does, a mediocre player at a midtable club who seems to think sitting on the bench is beneath him.
Absolutely fair comment. If mcClean was English nobody would be getting very excited about him. In addition he is 23 – not 17. He should know better.
I had the same problem when I ran an under 12 team. Kids who didn’t get to play sometimes threw a strop. Their excuse is that they were only 11 years of age. McClean needs to grow up. Trap must go that performance last night was appalling. McClean is clearly frustrated but nonetheless he mist control this frustration.
Trap out…
a manager not only has to manage and pick the right team and formation but he must instill confidence and belief into the players. this group of players are withheld from expressing themselves because they are selected defensive players designed to do a specific job, to play as a compact unit, then when we do get the ball, It’s head up and a long punt up to the striker hoping that he will get a good flick on or hope that the defender makes a mistake. yes we got to the Euros with this tactic and we were proud to see the Irish flag there but seriously the game has evolved so much in the last ten years that it is easy to see that if u have players that are encouraged to actually get the ball down and play and keep possession, u have a much better chance of scoring and let’s face it, apart from the 5 or 6 top teams in Europe, there are a lot of 2nd rate teams that we would be capable of beating, so in essence Trap has done an average job so far but I think his tenure is coming to an end. I must assume you are too young to remember O’Leary’s tenure at Leeds. Some definite progress but he ultimately brought the team to its knees and spent the club into oblivion
Cheers mate. I’ve still got it you know!
Trap should punish him by forcing him to play everyone of the remaining games in the group. n

Kinda looking good for the Mick McCarthy poll so far….. But it would be his backside in’t bacon slicer
“aint”?
I think he has a right to be upset when he watches three different strikers playing in hi position!
His ok
