SUNDERLAND WINGER JAMES MCCLEAN shut down his Twitter account last night after receiving death threats following his call-up to the Republic of Ireland Euro 2012 squad.

The Derry native was included in Giovanni Trapattoni’s 23-man panel on Monday afternoon, sparking a wave of sectarian abuse from some Northern Ireland fans angry with his decision to switch allegiances south of the border.

McClean, 23, won seven U21 caps for the North before he declared his wish to represent the Republic at senior level.

He made his senior debut as a substitute in February’s friendly against the Czech Republic and, after continuing to impress Trapattoni with his performances for Sunderland in the Premier League, made the cut for next month’s trip to Poland and Ukraine.

McClean immediately tweeted his delight following the squad announcement: “Absolutely honoured and couldn’t be happier to have been called up to represent my country at the Euros. No better feeling.”

One anonymous tweeter responded with a threat to shoot him, which was later deleted along with the account in question: “F**k up your dirty fenian bastard il make sure you get shot when you set foot back into gods country.”

Another abusive tweet, still visible on the site on Wednesday, said: “I hope your flight to Poland crashes you cunt. What a nice way to repay the association that brought you up as a player!”

McClean fired back a blanket response to the abuse on Monday, fanning the flames with a reminder that Northern Ireland did not qualify for the Euros, before finally taking the decision to shut the account yesterday.

“Love the dogs abuse am gettin of shock N.I fans, just worry about watchin ur own country at the euros… oh wait #mybad #awkward haha.”

A spokesperson for the FAI told RTÉ that “It’s a pity it has come to this, but it is maybe in his best interests in the short term.”

  • They sent James McClean death threats because he wouldn’t play for them and sent Neil Lennon death threats because he did play for them. These idiots aren’t interested in football, just bigotry.

    • You’re dead right there Caitlin. These people are absolute morons. I hope the police track them down and prosecute them the same way they did with that moron who posted racial comments about fabrice muamba.

    • Just living here in ireland…and i have to say is only a handfull of bad nuts who are going on like spoilt brats…those people on twitter, dont represent the rest if the north…

  • It’s amazing how some people hide behind their avatar and post the most incredibly disgraceful comments. Hope the Psni managed to catch them all, particularly Mr. Paton, who makes it somewhat of a tradition to post sectarian rubbish on James’ Twitter account.

At the end of the day, it’s a frigging game. Nobody deserves to put up with that crap.

The bigotry is not just confined to NI or to sports.

It’s amazing (and frightening really) how much hate there is out there on all sorts of issues. It’s visible every day on twitter and also on this site. It’s good that people have strong opinions, but so many people lash out in the most personal way at those they disagree with. Why can people not just debate issues without making them personal?

To bring it back to sports, online commentators should play the ball and not the man.

  • Bigots again . Grow up you Muppets and these lads making threats are cowards is say well done to him on his call up

  • Has the issue been brought to the attention of the PSNI I wonder? I’m sure deleting the comment and deleting the account wouldn’t save this person from prosecution. This hatred should not be tolerated.

  • Darron Gibson, Shane Duffy and James McClean were right to choose to play for the Republic of Ireland instead of Northern Ireland. All these bigots should get a life.

  • And you wonder why the Nationalist players in the north choose the Republic, Remember Ni v IIreland over a decade ago when Billy Bingham Encouraged the NI fans when they abused the Irish were getting in Windsor Park no change there. these guys are bored with peace me thinks.

    • Oskar, that is totally unfair and bigoted in its own right. I am a Nationalist from the North, living in the south. I know the majority of Unionists in the North would not abide by this type of behavior. This article is newsworthy, but it shouldn’t be used to attack all Northerners (of either background). It would be the same as saying those who have started the fights at the recent GAA matches are representatives of all Irish/Nationalists. You are going to get cretins and thugs in any given population. The guys who tweeted this abuse should be locked up, end of. Don’t allow incidents like this give the wrong impression about the vast majority of people living in the North.

    • Cal it’s not as if this is in isolation. There was the “Greysteel trick or treat” chanting, the Loughinisland massacre, Neil Lennon’s death threats, attacks on Polish fans (for being Catholic), bullets posted to Lennon and Niall McGinn from N Ireland and now this

That kind of thing doesn’t happen in other sports, doesn’t happen in the GAA and doesn’t happen in the Republic. Oskar is saying it’s not surprising young lads don’t want to play for the north. That’s not bigoted of him. It’s not bigotry to arrive at an opinion based on evidence

  • Morons. He was born on this island and he’s as Irish as the rest of us, They should be tracked down and charged, fools. Well done to James McClean for having the courage to follow his heart.

  • it will only serve to make him more determined at the Euros. i don’t blame him; who would want to represent those kind of people. Neil Lennon got death threats for PLAYING for NI, and McClean gets them for NOT playing, you can’t win with these people! it brings back the debate of the benefits of an Island of Ireland team, much like the rugby?

    • Aye I can imagine that us Southerners would be firmly welcomed to Windsor Park with an open (red) hand if we had an IoI team!!

    • Not a unvalid point, but the difference is that Football is pickled with sectarianism, Rugby isn’t! That’s why there will probably not be an all Island team!

It does have to be said too though, that the cretins who posted all that nonsense are NOT football supporters, they are trouble makers, and have no use for football, just the hate they want to stir up.

  • Idiots the lot of them. North or South, it’s still fucking Ireland, so he’s still representing his country

  • Hope the psni can catch these guys and they are named and shamed.the ifa need to commment on this, these sickos are from their fan base.

  • Wow frank.. Thats just weird, you would always have to pick the best team based on ability.

  • just really sad 2 see them coments on there ,,I tought we had got over all that kinda crap ,,why cant people get on ,and enjoy a bit of banter ,,sport dont need this

  • Stand your ground McClean!
    No Surrender to Loyalist fanatics!

  • James has the freedom to play for whichever country he is eligible for… you didn’t see English fans threatening some of Jacks Charltons Army in the 90′s because they chose to play for Ireland not England.

He’s from Derry like myself and like most people from the city follow Derry city (where James was playing before his switch to sunderland) who don’t play in the northern leagues, most people in the city follow the Republic team and naturally have no affiliation with the N.Ireland soccer or its supporters.

Can’t ever really see myself going to Windsor Park to shout out for NI in the near future.

  • sad pathetic second-hand English wannabees. easy to see why they have so many defectors to the Republic. they’re not a real country, just a collection of inbred bigots. well done, James. you made the right choice.

  • still dont understand why in football – ireland is split into two teams ,in rugby we only have one full ireland team and thats the way it should be in football … the northern irish and republic team should be one – because we wouldnt see problems like this … its a disgrace what those idiots said to him on Twitter … they’ll get what they deserve – karma.

    • The FAI split because teams based in the then Free State were being treated like crap by the IFA

I can’t think of any other sport where the island is split; Rugby, golf, boxing, GAA, hockey, cricket, athletics, showjumping, horse racing, rugby league…..meanwhile soccer is held to ransom by a noisy minority with really poor spelling

    • look at the supporters of ni football as a whole, the don’t ware the team colours they ware English and union jacks, chant biggited songs send death threats to players and non players alike. it more sectarian than any sports team I’ve seen. This isn’t a reflection on the majority of unionists in the north. but I would certainly be against an all island team with these sort or arseholes involved!!

  • @ricky_p1984 I am sending this comment to twitter so you can see this. Come on here and defend your bigotry and don’t bottle this by ignoring it. I bet if you went to Derry/Londonderry and said what you have been saying you wouldn’t make it out on your feet

  • Hi Niall. Was there something offensive about my comment why was it deleted.

  • I think we should join thr 2 teams together and have 5 from each country and pick the best goalkeeper. The manager to be changed every 3 years so we have the 2 countries represented. Then every one would be happy.

  • LooooL this is the must hilarious article I’ve ever read.
