GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI HAS added James McClean and Paul Green to his Republic of Ireland squad for next week’s friendly against the Czech Republic.

The decision to call up the pair brings Trapattoni’s squad to a total of 26 players for the game in the Aviva Stadium on 29 February.

Both players will join up with the squad on Sunday, the FAI confirmed this morning.

“Absolutely buzzin and honoured to be called up to represent my country,” McClean tweeted. “Best feeling there is.”

McClean, 22, joins Everton defender Shane Duffy as the only other uncapped player in the Ireland squad. Duffy was added to the squad last week as a replacement for the injured Richard Dunne, who fractured his clavicle while in action for Aston Villa.

Trapattoni’s decision not to include McClean in his initial squad raised eyebrows, with many supporters feeling that the winger’s recent performances for Sunderland were good enough to earn him a first international call-up.

McClean represented Northern Ireland at underage level, but declared his intention to switch south of the border last year. FIFA officially signed off on the Derry native’s international move earlier this month, freeing him to join the Republic as they prepare for their trip to Poland and Ukraine this summer.

Green, 28, last appeared in a friendly against Uruguay last March, but did not feature in the remainder of Ireland’s qualification campaign.

The Derby County midfielder has nine international caps.

Hopefully McClean will get a run out, loyalty to the likes if Stephen Hunt, Aidan McGeady and Liam Lawrence, however admirable, must be put to one side for the benefit of the side going forward. #COYBIG

  • Went on to Twitter to tweet James and wish him luck and was disappointed (but not surprised) to see negative and nasty tweets from Northern Irish people. One hoping he’d break his leg, etc. Hopefully he will take no notice and do a good job for us.

  • Great to see James McLean got his rightful call up and as as many Irish fans will hope that he does get a run and maybe get himself in the final squad .

  • From what I’ve seen of McClean so far he is a perfect Trappatoni player. He is obviously a threat going forward but his tracking back and defending qualities mean he will adapt easily to the bosses philosophy.

  • Great about McClean, but Paul Green? Seriously? He can’t get his game for Derby County. Trap’s selection policy defies logic.

  • McLean on the left Coleman on the right sounds good to me.Definitely from next campaign anyway.Would have Duff on right for the euros.Would of liking to see Hoolahan rather than Green.

  • Deserves his place, he has been outstanding for Sunderland and will give Ireland a real burst of energy down the wing. He is strong and knows how to put the ball in the net, something a couple of other lads might want to pay attention to. Lets hope Trap gives him a run out instead of sticking with Duff who is not the threat he used to be. Hunt? Plays well when he comes on as sub, more an impact player than a starter. McGeady is doing well for his club and needs to given a good run in the Irish team to show what he can do. Him on one side, McClean on the other definitely worth a try out . We need to give all these lads a few games so that they can stake a claim, it’s all very well being loyal to those members of the squad who played in the qualifiers but it would be madness not to include players who are in form or have come along a little after the qualifiers, we need our BEST squad possible at the Euro’s and if that means some of the players who started out in the squad at the start miss out then so be it, that’s football, they’re all well aware of the up’s and downs that come with being a footballer.

  • Is his name pronounced mc’clean’ or mc’clane’. I know how his name is spelt. I would’ve thought it was pronounced mc’clean’ but the pundits all say mc’clane’

  • McGeady on one side and McLean on the other would be my first choice, with duff waiting in the wings.stephen hunt is an awful footballer and shouldn’t be near the team. McGeady bashers are clueless

  • they better make McClean captain now and maybe a player manager role. Maybe consider dropping the rest of the team and starting him in every position?
