Senior players Gallagher and O'Connor to lead Mayo U21 side to face Roscommon

The counties meet in the Connacht championship on Wednesday.

SENIOR PLAYERS ADAM Gallagher and Diarmuid O’Connor will lead the Mayo U21 side for Wednesday night’s Connacht U21 quarter-final against Roscommon.

Gallagher will captain the team from left half-forward while O’Connor starts at midfield. Both players saw game time in the Mayo senior side’s first three league games this spring.

Full-forward Evan Regan and corner-forward Conor O’Shea, a younger brother of Aidan and Seamus, are other players who have previously been involved with the Mayo senior squad.

Midfielder O’Connor, a younger brother of senior forward Cillian, is one of four members of last year’s All-Ireland winning minor side named in Mayo’s starting line-up. Centre-back Stephen Coen, midfielder Padraig Prendergast and centre-forward Michael Plunkett were also members of that triumphant team.

Prendergast is one of two current minors in the U21 side, along with goalkeeper Matthew Flanagan. Substitutes Michael Hall and Liam Irwin were also on last September’s minor winning team.
